SINGLE REVIEW: Bitch I’m The Shit by Yaysh

Yaysh just dropped a new single and music video, called “Bitch I’m The Shit.” Produced by Troy “R8dio” Johnson, the song is the follow-up to “Daep,” a tasty erotic hip hop tune, and “Twisted,” a buoyant pop song. According to Yaysh, “Bitch I’m The Shit” narrates the incommensurable clash of secular ego and sacred soul in the hip hop world, as well as parallel contradictions in life.

Referring to herself as a hybrid artist, Yaysh fuses her practice of meditation with her music, using the dynamics of both to keep her connected. Or as she puts it, “I had found a way to both care for my mind and express it freely. For me these two things combined (music and meditation) equaled freedom.”

Stylistically, Yaysh spans the spectrum, utilizing pop and hip hop elements, along with indie and EDM. The resulting sound is fresh, primal and crazily contagious. With a full-length album slated to drop soon, she is amassing momentum by releasing a series of singles and videos full of fiery energy and spectral sonic pigments.

“Bitch I’m The Shit” opens with elegant, delicate synths and Yaysh’s sylph-like voice riding a stylishly austere and measured R&B melody. Then the melody shifts to a cool, slick trap melody thrumming with a bottomless bassline and washboard percussive elements, imbuing the tune with a muscular rhythm. Skanking harmonics undulate with buff effluvium and just a filament of reggae tincture that’s scrumptious, like a tickle of emotion.

The combination of alternating R&B and trap flavors infuses the music with a shifting auditory sensation akin to a Wagnerian leitmotif, appending a delicious complexity of style and substance. On the R&B segments, Yaysh’s voice exudes mesmerizing seraphic colors and pristine tones floating like misty tendrils. The switch to hurly-burly harpy-like tones, a voice like tearing paper, packs a wicked aural punch of chilling dynamism. This display of vocal flexibility, from sonorous spirals to compact savage timbres, is ferociously effective.

The video flits between singularly diverse dimensions. It opens with Yaysh in the forest surrounded by wolves, as Yaysh stares at the camera with cocaine eyes, menacing and zombie-like. Then it cuts to a warehouse full of luxury cars, black-clad women and a pit bull. Yaysh presides over a drug deal, emanating dark determination and beau coup femme-fatale vibes, like Cruella Deville in the hood. It’s a great video, moussed up with potent symbols of aggressive assertion.

“Bitch I’m The Shit” is factor five excellent. The flow of the melody from ethereal to nasty and tight is yummy, while the pulsing rhythm infects like a virus. The icing on the musical cake is Yaysh’s voice, moving from café electrique to viciously corrosive. Yaysh has it going on!
