Can you talk to us more about your new single “Strangers”?
A: Strangers is a song about not recognizing someone who you once knew so well. In other words, falling out of love. It’s set to an amazing piano drive and big melodies and singing to really emphasize how deep that type of love hurt can be.
Did any one event inspire you to write this song?
A: I think it came from a place of common heartbreak. We wrote this song a very long time ago around the time we were writing other “love lost” songs. It is a common road a lot of relationships take.
Antea: It’s amazing how this song has actually become the soundtrack to quite a few of my relationships, unfortunately.
Do you have any plans to release a music video for the track?
A: Absolutely! We shot a video mid-December and it will be released on the same day as the album, February 9th. Very excited about it!
The single comes off your new album Pride. Liberty. Detroit – what’s the story behind the title?
A: This album represents the grit, work ethic and realness of a city that was once forgotten, but is forgotten no more. We are proud to be from Detroit and freely talk about it. The reason we have survived this long in a rapidly changing music industry has a big part to do with our survival in Detroit. It also represents the rebirth and growth in the city and in APLUS.
How was the recording and writing process?
A: We recorded this album in 3 days. Our pianist (Brandon “Showtime” Bland) was in one room and we were in another and we sang every song from top to bottom concert style so we could accomplish that live, raw and emotional feel. Most of the songs on PRIDE LIBERTY DETROIT were written over the course of our 10+ year careers as industry songwriters. We took our top 12 catalog songs and sang them ourselves!
What role did the city of Detroit play in the writing of this record?
A: We are signed to Original 1265 which is a Detroit based independent record label. The album was cut, mixed and mastered in Metro Detroit (Dearborn Heights) at Studio A where artists such as Mary J Blige, Jay-Z, The Clark Sisters, Anita Baker and several more have recorded and of course, written by us. Being born and bred in this great city, every bit of our upbringing and exposure to life in Detroit influenced us directly and indirectly. From singing in church to studying classical music in Detroit Public Schools, the city has played a major role in influencing who we are a writers and musicians.
You’ve worked with a lot of major artists – Beyonce, Tamar Braxton, Mary J. Blige, etc. – but this is your first time coming out as musicians on your own. Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working in your own material?
A: Yes. The songs that are on this album are related to us. Our lives. Our stories. Our experiences. It feels and sounds personal. When writing for other artists our personal experiences do sometimes come into play, but it is about creating a storyline based on what the artist wants to say and how they feel.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics on the album?
A: LIFE! Since most of the songs were written prior to us deciding to record an album, all of the mountains and valleys of love, struggling to find financial security, friendships and family are found in every single lyric!
Any plans to hit the road?
A: ABSOLUTELY! The album will be released on February 9th. We’re having a big album release show at Northern Lights in Detroit that evening to premiere the video and sing some songs and then after that? More shows in America and beyond! Onward and upward!!
What else is happening next in Aplus´s world?
A: The main focus is releasing this album. It has been a road to get to this place so our focus is really settling into our artistry. We’re still writing new material for upcoming projects. One project we’re excited about is KeKe Palmer. She just recorded a new song we wrote for her a couple of months ago. She’s a force to be reckoned with and her new music is super fun! Of course we’re working on other high profile projects but, we don’t want to say to much. You’ll be hearing A LOT from APLUS in 2018! Singing, writing new material and performing live. We are excited!
