SINGLE REVIEW: Satisfied by Ashley J

The latest single from incendiary pop icon in the making Ashley J reflects the latest stage in her evolution from a budding Nashville recording artist into a formidable pop talent who brings deceptively powerful songwriting chops to bear on her material. There’s no question that J understands the importance of a compelling presentation in the modern pop world, but there’s real substance behind everything she does – if no other reason than her measured restraint immeasurably enhances this performance. “Satisfied” has a strong electronically driven groove that’s never too cluttered and balances space with singing and deft melodic touches in a way capable of drawing in any listener. It has a sleek stylishness accompanying its substance allowing it to basically be all things to every audience. There truly is something here for everyone and “Satisfied” sparkles with confidence and musicality. Ashley J’s impressive rise through the ranks of popular music continues unabated with this latest single.

“Satisfied” has synth lines providing a steady flourish throughout the work and steady electronic percussion that doesn’t just follow a single trajectory but, instead, takes a number of interesting tracks throughout the course of the song. While there is a definite structure to “Satisfied”, it isn’t the paint by numbers variety and there are subtle peaks and valleys packed into the song’s movement that’s sure to contribute to its near instant appeal. There is something intensely familiar about what Ashley does here, but there’s also a quality to this song that marks it as something different than standard pop fare. The electronically drumming has genuine, surprising resonance despite its electronic origins and gives the song a sturdy spine that defines its shape throughout the three minute twenty second running time and Ashley J’s voice is there for every second, soaring, falling, and imbuing the track with unquestionable presence.

Her voice has elements of pop and soul rife in its tone and she effortlessly switches between gears depending on what the moment demands. She isn’t a self indulgent singer by far; one of the key elements defining the success of this single is her instinct for knowing when to pull back at just the right time and let the music take a much deserved portion of the spotlight. The quality of her voice and phrasing is such that she takes an already above-average lyric for the form and raises it several notches just on the back of her interpretation. There are a number of captivating lines in the song that listeners will gravitate to, but the writing is exceptional on the whole and nicely complements both her voice and the arrangement. Ashley J’s “Satisfied” definitely hits its marks as a pure pop gem, but there’s so much here for any listener open minded enough to give it a chance. This new single kicks off the next phase of her career with all the pomp it deserves.
