INTERVIEW: Alex Weksler
Hi Alex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m doing well! Just getting back in the swing of things after the holidays. Thank you so much for having me!
Can you talk to us more about your song “Air”?
Of course! “Air” is the title track off of my EP that I released in October, and it’s one of my favorites. It basically sums up everything that was going on in my head, and really represents the culmination track of the EP. “Air” highlights the turning point in a relationship and really puts into words the place I was in at that time.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
The song was inspired by an awful night out! I had a lot on my mind at the time and was at this bar that totally wasn’t my scene, I didn’t feel comfortable so I decided to take 15 minutes and go write some rough lyrics in the bathroom. The next morning I found the napkin I wrote out the lyrics on and created the song!
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Yes! I’m going to be shooting a music video for this song and another track off the EP, “Gold”, in the next couple weeks. These will be my first real music videos and I’m so excited to see the songs come to life in that way.
Why naming the album after this track in particular?
I chose to name the EP after this track because it speaks volumes of where I was personally during the creation of these songs. I had so much uncertainty in the relationship I was in and myself, so you hear that evolution through the EP as a whole and “Air” really highlights that and means a lot to me.
What made you want to do a concept album?
All of my songs were written off of pure emotion, whether it’s being totally infatuated or heartbroken. However, once I pieced the songs together into an album I found that listening to it from beginning to end told the story of that moment when you first meet someone and that spark happens, to learning to close the book on something that just isn’t making you happy anymore. I like to say it ended up being like a musical scrapbook of that time of my life!
How was the recording and writing process?
Both were super therapeutic! The songs were all written in the span of the past year and recorded over the summer at Room 17 in Brooklyn, with an awesome producer named Joe Rogers. It was a great experience because since all of the songs are acoustically based it really challenged me to explore other musical elements to bring the tracks to life.
What aspect of relationships did you get to explore on this record?
If you listen to the album, you know it’s for sure a bit of a rollercoaster! I’m one of the most hopeless romantics you’ll ever meet and I think I get the most inspirations out of falling in and out of love with people. This EP gives the listener all the different aspects of that story from beginning to end.
Any plans to hit the road?
I hope! All my shows coming up are located in New York but I would love to do some touring this summer, but no definite upcoming plans.
What else is happening next in Alex Weksler´s world?
I have some exciting projects coming up! I have two single releases coming out next month and a lyric video/ music video. I’m also going to be launching a website! I’m most excited about the shows I have coming up in February: playing The Bowery Electric on February 3rd at 8:00 and The Bitter End February 15 at 7:00.
