INTERVIEW: Canadian Singer/Songwriter Cara Leigh

Hi Cara, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey! Thank you for having me. I’m well thank you. How about yourself?

Can you talk to us more about your song “Went Away”?

Sure! What would you like to know?

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

Indeed. My childhood best friend passed away 10 years ago. We were in cities that were geographically quite distant for school, and the last few years of her life, I wasn’t in nearly as much contact with her. It was something I regretted for years that I didn’t do differently. I assumed we would reconnect during holidays and breaks, and naturally reconnect again after we weren’t living so far away. I can’t change that I would have done things differently had I known, but I can change how I move forward. So, I wrote a song about it.

Any plans to release a music video for the track?

There is just a live acoustic version of “Went Away” – which by the way, is quite a different version instrumentally than the EP version. I decided to strip it right down and focus on performance.

The single comes off your new album Home – what’s the story behind the title?

Home is about feeling connected; perhaps a sense of belonging and/or being a part of a community. I think having a sense that we “belong” is something that can be so powerful, and yet, we often struggle to feel that way. I know in my own life, I certainly have. This song was inspired by brief moments where I felt that connection, and how I’ve channeled that in my life and try to carry it with me in the world

How was the recording and writing process?

It’s taken a few years to finalize this EP. There was a lot of re-writing and re-recording as I kept changing and editing the tracks. I wrote the music and lyrics, would record it, and send it to Cornelius Julius. Then I’d re-write and re-record and send him a new version. We did this multiple times for each track. Cornelius Julius was really patient with all my changes and after about 2 years of this process, we were finally able to get to a place where I felt the tracks were the way I wanted them to be.

What role does Canada play in your writing?

That’s a good question – I’m not really sure! Perhaps the winter months provide great opportunities to spend time indoors writing. Or we have a lot of areas to hike and enjoy nature where I live, and I often go out to clear my mind and be active. I’ve found this has helped with writer’s block and keeps the writing process fresh.

How has tragedy and loss shaped the lyrics on this record?

As I mentioned, “Went Away” is about grief and loss, while “Burning Free” is about making intentional choices about making the best of what time I have, because of the impacts of loss. But I’ve tried to balance the EP with hopeful messages and experiences that are meant to resemble ups and downs in life.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Reading, Travelling and conversations with my partner, investigating options for a work/life balance, and generally on trying to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not currently. There will be a couple shows in and around where I live, but there are not any tours planned.

What else is happening next in Cara Leigh´s world?

I have a few collaborations in the works, as usual, and I’ve written 3 new songs for my next EP.
