Can you talk to us more about your new single “Show Me The Magic”?
It’s a call to arms for all the lovers out there… a decree that there be more passion and love in everything that we do. It’s also a reminder to myself to notice more than just the status quo in life. I want to see and feel all that magic and passion, and let it breathe life and joy into even the tiniest cracks in our world.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
Initially, it was inspired by the people who care about me and want to see me find love and happiness. But then there’s so much more that I want. As my mom would say, “Nothing less than everything will do.” We’re all capable of so much. I want us all to find magic and romance with all of creation that allows us to see our way through the everyday.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! Always I see a song before I write it… I even make ‘visual mood boards’ to triangulate the feeling of the song I want to create. Last time around, the video for “Revolution” won several awards, so I have a pretty high bar now!
The single comes off your new album Infinite Stranger – what’s the story behind the title?
The title is inspired by the spy we all love: “Bond… James Bond”. I’m a huge fan. James is so committed to protecting the world from danger that he can’t or wont form real attachments. What loneliness and freedom in that. What mystery and allure! Danger! Intrigue! See? A fan. Characters like Bond always appeal to me.
How was the recording and writing process?
I LOVE recording. I never want it to end. I wish I could be in the studio every day of my life.
Pre-production was magical. Deron’s playing is so inspiring, and Andrea’s songwriting is so accommodating. They live close to me, so I would ‘pad’ over in my pajamas with a bottle of wine and it was like a creative pajama party!
Then recording… It’s so amazing to truly express yourself, and then hear it played back. I don’t even recognizing my voice sometimes. Then at the end of the process, I get to hear it all fully crafted and coiffed (instead just hearing the reverberations from inside of your skull). I love recording.
What was it like to work with Justin Stanley, Deron Johnson and Andrea Remanda? How did those relationships develop?
They’re all such beautiful loving people, and the process was exquisite.
I met Andrea though a mutual friend, and we hit it off right away. I mean, we developed a concept for a TV show within the first 30 minutes! Then it was creative project after creative project. Eventually, she asked Deron to get involved, and then we approached Justin right as he was being nominated for a Grammy (for his work with Prince). It was all very organic and natural.
How much did they get to influence the album?
Hard to quantify something like that… The goal was to crystalize my vision into it’s truest form, and they did! I expressed my inspiration and everything I hoped to accomplish, and they busted their asses until it was this gorgeous, evolved sound. It blew me away. The record is better than I dreamed it could be, so I’d say they influenced the album a ton.
How much creative room was left for you?
All of it. I mean, it was a team, but it was MY team.
What role does LA play in your music?
It’s where everything is for me these days. I love living here because there are INNUMERABLE artists to work with. It’s like home for the mad people- in the best way. The talent pool is mind blowing and everyone is here to pursue their dreams. Inspiration grows on the trees here. LA is home!
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Most of the lyrics were pulled straight out of my journals. Andrea and I started brainstorming what we wanted to say, then I scoured my notebooks for seeds and phrases. I have over ten years worth, so there was plenty to work with. We ended up with so much more than the EP, and I can’t wait to record them all and share them with the world.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re putting that together now. I can say I’m planning several shows around Austin during the festival season in March, and a big Hotel Cafe show here in LA for the EP release (in April). Of course I’ll be updating my website with performance dates as they confirm… so subscribing to the email list is a good idea! 😉
What else is happening next in Aja Warren’s world?
I’m an actress and a producer and a singer, so I’m always juggling and always creating. Along side the EP, I’m developing a couple TV shows that I hope to sell this year. All these outlets inform one another, so each of my projects have some component that reflects that balance. It keeps me inspired!
