INTERVIEW: Ember Weir

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’re good, thanks for having us!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Problem”?

Well ‘Problem’ was literally the first song we recorded and finished as Ember Weir. It was literally what started this whole project because it encapsulated so many things we wanted the band to be about. Musically it covered the indie/rock vibe we enjoy while still channeling the kind of, emotive feeling we want to show through our music.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The classic break up scenario pretty much. I was going through a really, really hard time and this was just what came out… I think I wrote it in like an hour. It was like the easiest song I’ve ever written!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, definitely. We planning it as we speak!

How was the recording and writing process?

I was working away on my own somewhere for a few weeks and I just wrote it out acoustic. The whole song just fell out in about an hour and I was so desperate to demo it but I couldn’t because I was away. So I had to retain the whole arrangement in my head for like a month until I could demo it. This was before we’d even started Ember Weir at all. At the time me and Tom had still been playing here and there with another band, so when I got back we tentatively started demoing ‘Problem’ out but it just wasn’t working anymore, and that session marked the end of our older projects and kind of told me and Tom we needed to find something new. That was the birth of Ember Weir… we focused on writing and demoing for like 4/5months and just wanted to discover what we really cared about with our music and what we wanted to say. Then we finally went in the studio with Ben in January 2017 to begin properly working on the song… and we’re only just getting round to releasing it!

What’s been like to work with Ben Sansom and how did that relationship develop?

Ben’s great! We’ve always been huge Lower Than Atlantis fans, and we got to know him about 2 years ago when we ended up doing some recording with him on our previous project. I’d never been the sole guitarist of a band before, I’d always just played rhythm, so this time he really pushed me to think about my guitar parts and what I was playing, and this really became an important part of our sound. He knows the importance of when something needs to sound big, but also when it needs to be quiet and subtle. He’s also a great guy to work with… we always have a blast when we’re in the studio!

What role does Birmingham play in your music?

We’ve really adopted Birmingham as our city… there’s nowhere closer to home we can really play, so it’s been good for us to be able to go there and play with some great bands, and the support network and community of bands and promoters is great too. There’s a great indie scene in Birmingham at the moment, and it pushes you as a band to strive for better when the next band on is always amazing! Also ELO are from Birmingham and they’re like my favourite band ever!

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Probably not just yet… we hope we can start working on an album one day!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yeah we’re working on some tour dates around the UK this year, we’ve really adopted Birmingham as our city… there’s nowhere closer to home we can really play, so it’s been good for us to be able to go there and play with some great bands, and the support network and community of bands and promoters is great too. Yeah we’re working on some tour dates around the UK this year, and to hit some festivals in the summer too! We’ve got a few dates rolling in which we can announce soon. We’ll definitely be headlining a big show in Birmingham this year. We’re just going to see where the year takes us and do as much as we can!

What else is happening next in Ember Weir’s world?

We’re working really hard behind the scenes on some many things. We’ve always wanted to work on a way to express more of the concept around Ember Weir, so we’re working on some ideas for interesting content, so we’ll have something interesting hopefully very soon! And loads more music!
