INTERVIEW: Hadassah

Hi Hadassah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi I’ve been good, just been working on music and trying to be my best self.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “He Said”?

Yeah! So I wrote “He Said” about a year ago. I was in a relationship for about three years at that point and shit was going side ways and the song was a way for me to work through the possibility that the relationship was coming to an end. My ex had been an amazing boyfriend but all of a sudden he checked out of our relationship and short of broke all of the promises “He Said” he wouldn’t. I wrote the song from the prospective of a woman talking to another woman explaining we’ve all been there.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, I’m super excited about this one. I wont give away to many details but the video concept came to me soon after the song was finished.

The single comes off your new album Flexinmydemons – what’s the story behind the title?

Flexinmydemons represents all of the embarrassing and not so pretty side of us that we try to hide and keep from the world. All of us are a work in progress, making mistakes learning from our past and that is nothing to be ashamed of. The point of the project was to look at my insecurities, toxic love, self doubt and all the other parts of being a human that we sometimes don’t discuss.  I wanted my music to be a place people could go when they are feeling alone, so they don’t feel so alone.

How was the recording and writing process?

A lot of this project was written about a year ago. My writing process is usually stream of conscious writing. Ill turn on my voice notes and just use flow. When I write something I like I practice and hit feet1st studios. I’m super excited about this project because the engineer lee helped me to find the best way to record so that ill like the way my voice sounds. I’m very particular about that. I don’t like vocal booths. I don’t like recording with head phones. I like to basically record myself live, all the extra stuff like vocal booths and headphones get in the way. I think each project you learn a little bit more about yourself and what you want to do differently. Next time around ill still use stream of conscious writing but I think its time to start looking at and using song writing structures. Who knows.

What dark stories did you get to explore on this record?

Most of this project is about toxic love, and accepting the love you feel you deserve because of lack of self love.  The song “Roses” is about accepting roses (roses die) from a lover who is never there, neglects you and makes you feel like your insane for wanting more. But the lesson here isn’t that the lover is offering this lesser love (sometimes that all people can give because they are on their own journey) but that you have agreed to accept it, this is what you feel you are worth. The lyrics are “since I can’t have you ill settle for your roses.”

Any plans to hit the road?

Ill be in LA for 2 weeks performing a bit after the project releases and then who knows.

What else is happening next in Hadassah´s world?

Not really sure ill definitely be performing the project releasing videos and probably start on the next body of work because its super hard for me to not write. But other than that I plan to be a better friend, girlfriend, sister and better to myself. All I can ask for.
