INTERVIEW: Yazzy

Hi Yazzy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! I’m very well thank-you… how are you?

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Heal Me”?

Heal Me is a track off my new EP ‘Illusion Of Love’, which will be released on January the 3rd.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

Heal Me is a song I wrote in a very low period of my life. I had decided to leave college & become a full time self employed musician to follow my dream of being a well known singer/songwriter. I had a 3-4 month period where i felt so lost, unmotivated & i didn’t believe in myself, this song is written about that time in my life.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

Yes! its out now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWEvCXQeRPo

Would it be a follow up to any of your previously released video?

No, I’ve been writing and creating music since I was 10… I’m now 18 & as you would assume, my music has developed massively & especially in the past year or two. I feel like this EP is a more mature, developed released…i’m proud of the music/music videos i’ve released before but this is something completely different.

The single comes off your new album Illusion of Love – what’s the story behind the title?

When it comes to choosing your album title, its literally one of the biggest decisions in the whole process, but i knew straight away that ‘Illusion Of Love’ was the one, I didn’t even come up with any other suggestions, I knew as soon as I wrote the song ‘Illusion Of Love’ it would be the title track.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was A massive learning experience for me, i knew i wanted to just start releasing lots of new music after 1.5 years of not releasing any due to being in college..I wrote & created 3 tracks, which I was going to release as singles..I loved the tracks, could imagine them being played on the radio & I knew a lot of my followers would love the tracks but I knew in my heart they weren’t me. They were far too over produced & very inspired by artists such as Little Mix, I wrote a song which literally could’ve been the re-write of ‘Shoutout To My Ex’, the track was soooo awesome but not me. I’m a ballad, emotional, heart felt kind of girl & though I do write some sassy lyrics they need to be interpreted in a style/way that is me, emotional and heartfelt.

How has Sam Smith and Adele influenced your music?

These two artists, along with Frances and JP Cooper have influenced my music so much. The turning point for me really was when I was part of a viral sing-along for Adele outside Wembley when she cancelled her two final shows. I was stood there surrounded by hundreds of Adele fans, singing along to her tracks. Now, obviously Adele is an extremely loved singer but in my head up until then I felt like I needed to be more young & current as I am only young myself but i do feel like i’m a 25 year old in an 18 year olds body. That night made me realise that there is a place in the music industry for an artist like me, I’m not gonna dance around the stage to electro-pop in a leotard (though i may do that around my house)…I want to stand on stage in totally over the top dresses, with an orchestra, singing songs about boys who’ve broken my heart…that is me. Yes maybe I don’t have my orchestra just yet but the simplicity of these artists, I think is what make them so incredible & successful. Its about the talent, the voice, the songwriting, the performance, the connection…seeing this & learning this is what has helped me find who I am.

What aspect of love did you get to explore on this record and what made you want to touch these themes?

To keep it completely real with you, I know i’m young & haven’t experienced relationships & love to the level of some people but i’ve experienced what i think is love & had my heartbroken…for example the title track ‘Illusion Of Love’ is written about imagining a relationship to be more than it is, I feel like thats a trait of a songwriter, my imagination may be too big for my own good. I’ve touched on falling in love, heart break & real life situation that effect us. I feel like my songs are like stories, so please listen to the tracks & let the song tell you my experiences.

Any plans to hit the road?

Oooh yes! Starting with my album launch at The Pier House, Westward Ho! on the 5th of January. I’m going to spend 2018 gigging all over the UK & hopefully getting myself & my music heard.

What else is happening next in Yazzy’s world?

Really, right now its just EP EP EP EP EP EP. Me & my siblings have just been given a puppy for Christmas, so its really just music & my puppy, Alice right now. My new years resolution is to write at least a song a week, my plan is to write a huge portfolio of songs, to release myself, write for other artists etc. I want to continue to gig 3/4 times a week & grow a bigger following, release more music regular & really learn more about the industry this year.
