INTERVIEW: PORN

French industrial rockers PORN recently released their third album The Ogre Inside and a music video for the title track was filmed in Los Angeles. The band, named after The Cure’s album Pornography, aimed to make this third full length a darker and more introspective effort than the previous releases.

Here, vocalist and songwriter Philippe Deschemin tells us a little about the inspirations and efforts that it took to create The Ogre Inside.

How would you classify your music?

I think it’s a mixtures of rock, metal with a gothic and industrial rock touch. Many journalists describes the band as an industrial Rock or Gothic Metal band. Both of theses classifications are ok to me. The idea was to create an attractive and dangerous music, something sexy and dangerous. I like the idea to create a music like a beautiful, tasty fruit with a razor blade inside.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

A top 5 … It’s very difficult to say… Number 1:  I’d choose The Cure. Robert Smith’s band had a big influence on my early career. Our band name come from their album Pornograhy. I am impressed with his ability to create dark emotional song and happy pop songs too. I love is voice.

Fields of the Nephilim also have a strong influence on me. The Elyzium album is one of my favorite albums of all time… Carl McCoy voice is so hypnotizing…

David Bowie is like a nevering source of inspiration, some of our glam inspiration came from the man. He is the boss.

Type O negative is also one of my favorite bands, Peter Steele was so special. What a songwriter! What a singer!

I really like the Draconian times era of Paradise Lost , and their eponymous album from 2016 is a masterpiece.

And last but not least : Killing Joke. I love their sound, i am very respectful of the career, the are true, dedicated to their music. I like also bands like early Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson; Ministry, Skinny Puppy …

What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want them to have eargasm! I want them to enter our world and feel the music in their flesh. I want them to feel a unique experience during the listening. It’s very difficult to create something unique… I have built this album like a journey, “un voyage au bout de la nuit”. And the journey continues, but no one knows how it will ends…

How’s the music scene in France? Do you think that there is a revival of Industrial Music?

In France, the majority of the people are listening to hip-hop and pop music, and what we call here : variété. It’s like Celine Dion, Witney Houston… That kind of stuff but in french. We don’t have many rock or metal bands, Gojira is the most famous. But they did the majority of their career outside France. In France, not many people know about Gojira, except the metalheads. I do not consider PORN as a french band. It’s a band with french members. I spend a lot of time outside France. I travel a lot, especially in north of Europe.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

We’ve done many… and I loved each of them. Maybe the one I was the more  impressed by was playing with the legendary Christian Death. When I was younger,  I was a big fan of CD. Child, I cannot even imagine having my own band. I am respectful of the career of Valor. And he is a very sweet person. To me playing live is a sort of comunion: us, the people, and our music. The holy trinity of the PORN Cult. We wanna share our emotion with the people, share a catharsis led by PORN music. And a solitary pleasure too. Like anything, to be done properly, you need to feel pleasure doing it.

How was the experience of filming the video for “The Ogre Inside”?

It s the first video we shot in the US. And a shooting in LA, it’s a very great experience. Industrialism Films are very professional. We shot at the Dystopian Studio. Amanda La Trobe, the female actress, looks so great on the camera! The song The Ogre inside probably adds up the global concept of the album. It’s a song about struggle, about the combat against the Ogre Inside , and how this fight is doomed to fail. The Ogre will always win, or at least, the Ogre will drive you to madness. This video was shot in Los Angeles, in October.

Is there a song on your recently released album The Ogre Inside that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

It’s very difficult, cause these songs are like my children… Probably “May Be The Last Time”. Certainly because it’s the first song written in that style, a very gothic metal. A slow song, very sad, very dark. And I feel a lot of emotion singing it. I a quite proud of the mixing (I mixed the album myself). I like the atmosphere of “May Be The Last Time”. The song reminds me of my death; I died a long time ago. The song is a whimper, the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions.

How have you evolved as an artist since your previous album?

Our first album was practically a demo. It was the foundation of our style, with song like Soft Machine Porn Machine, The Fee, or our cover of Blondie’s “Call Me”. The sound was very rock/pop with an industrial metal and touch (the influence of The Cure, Killing Joke, Bauhaus was strong). The second album From the void to the infinite was a continuation of this style. The songs and the production were industrial rock with a cold wave touch. This new album is more dark, louder, more metal, more gothic. We used a real drums, the guitars are louder in the mix and my voice is darker. I wanted to put more of my dark side in this album. I am getting older and darker with the age/ and I wanted to write an album that reflect this mood. With the ages, it seems that the ogre inside is winning the fight, I am letting him go and taking control of me. To resume, this album is darker, louder, better (I hope!).

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Bowie! He is such an inspiration, on almost every aspects of the life and career of many artists. He is like a father figure to me. Having a dinner with him would be priceless…And of course, sharing a french wine with Peter Steele. I would love that ! He was so inspiring. Among the living : I am a big fan of Queen Adreena. The band is no longer active, but i hope they’ll be back one day. Having a tour with them would be so so cool.

What’s next for you?

We just shot a new video for the song: “She holds my will”, to be released in January. And I have started the recording of the new album. I hope it will be released in the end of 2018. Maybe we’ll have a European tour in April and looking forward to play in North America soon.
