Can you talk to us more about your new single “Pop”?
I had so much fun creating it. It’s such a different vibe. One of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
I was actually listening to Fergie’s “London Bridge” when I thought of it. A nursery rhyme cleverly turned into a sexy song, that was still fun and upbeat. And I decided on Pop Goes the Weasel. I also wanted it to have a swing feel, like that feeling everyone gets when Larry Elgart’s “Hooked on Swing” comes on, where your feet just can’t stop moving.
Any plans to release a video for the release?
I am working on video ideas currently. No concrete date set on when I’ll be releasing, but early 2018 is the goal.
How was the recording and writing process?
I actually flew to LA to record “Pop.” We created the beat here in NY and I wrote it on the plane ride over. It wasn’t the easiest writing process, because I really wanted to be as metaphorical as possible, while being sensual and still write something everyone could sing along to.
What role does NYC play in your writing?
My assertiveness, confidence and attitude come across in my writing as well as my personality lol and its is a common persona among New York women. I want ALL women to be confident so I write songs telling people to be confident, portraying confidence, I also talk about the moments when i’m not confident and how I find the strength to pull myself out of that. New Yorkers are hustlers, we don’t quit and we dont take no for a final answer. And I feel that all my songs portray that strong woman. Even at my most vulnerable times, there is strength in just being able to discuss it and sing about it out loud.
How’s your new EP coming along?
I’m excited for it! It’s a totally different side of me. Same artist, just a new layer.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Nothing is finalized yet. I’m hoping for a January/February release and playing with several title names.
After the release of your previous record – were you any nervous while working on this new material?
Absolutely. I get nervous about everything haha!! Every project I do has a theme, so deciding on what I would talk about this time around and the topic being sexuality and sensuality, I was nervous. When I first decided I said “OH YEA THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT, IVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE” then I started writing and I was like “OH NO I DONT KNOW IF I COULD SAY THESE THINGS” So I had a lot of help by listening to other amazing women. Like Madonna, Janet, Christina, Beyonce & Rihanna who are very confident and own their sexuality and listening to all their music on repeat gave me the confidence to work on this project.
Any plans to hit the road?
Absolutely!!!! I love love love performing! I can’t wait to start touring. I am hoping to be able to travel and perform more in 2018.
What else is happening next in Kat Capone’s world?
Currently working on a concert in New York City. I’m in the middle of creating the theme, and song list and also working on costume ideas. It should be a lot of fun!
