PREMIERE: Success Releases New Single “Politics and Critics”

Success delivers “Politics and Critics” today, December 8th, it’s the cosmic new single from his upcoming EP Black Balled. Lyrically, the track outlines Success’s inner-struggle with being an independent artist and fighting the ups and downs of the industry. It’s one of his most introspective tracks to date and a healthy introduction to Success’s fresh new sound.

Black Balled is a swift left turn from Success’s previous image. After releasing You’re Welcome in 2013, Success took some time to focus more on songwriting and establishing himself in the Los Angeles music scene and has since decided to completely redirect his image. Success has opted to re-enter into the spotlight under different circumstances – he’s all art, no image. He is stepping away from the spotlight by deciding to keep his face completely hidden.

“Politics and Critics” is the official welcome to the new world of Success. His Black Balled EP will be released in February and he’ll be releasing additional content in the coming months. Get familiar now because it’s going to be an adventure.

In addition, we had a chance to have a chat with Success to discuss the new single and more!

Hi Success, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m still getting adjusted to my move to L.A., nonetheless I’ve been blessed, no complaints at all, God is good.  I’m just simply trying to make sure I learn something new everyday, and continue growing spiritually, mentally, and physically because anything that is not constantly growing or changing is considered to be dead.  I really feel like I’ve cracked/hacked the code to this thing called life in a sense.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Politics and Critics”?

The Politics side of the song kind of addresses the fact that I know I won’t get certain opportunities in the music business because of my integrity, honor, dignity, sanity, never kiss a#% policy, independence, and there are no Grammys on the shelves and platinum plaques on the wall, or because I don’t know certain people and I’m ok with that, because the power is in the people’s hands, which are the fans.

Now the critics side of the song confronts the fact that there will be a whole lot of people criticizing my music, my art, and my character, etc. that know absolutely nothing about me or the art of music, more often than not they will be the same journalists, writers, news reporters etc. on the platforms and media outlets that helped build me up that will play a huge role in trying to destroy me.  I’m very conscious of this, duly noted.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

I’m generally speaking for all of the independent artists that can’t or won’t speak up for themselves, culture leaders, and envelope pushers that the music/entertainment industry has shunned for being themselves, and standing for something and not falling for anything.  There is an enormous list of individuals and events I could name but I don’t want to miss anybody or leave anything out….

The single comes off your new album Black Balled – what’s the story behind the title?

It’s based on the content or verbiage in all of the songs on the project, I know that I will be a thorn in a lot of peoples sides, companies/corporations included.  However I’m just prepared and ready to be crucified and nailed to the cross for being true to myself and what I believe in regardless of who it offends or what the consequences are.  As a result, I’m sure I’ll be Black Balled at award shows, banned on radio stations, banned from tv (shout out to Nore, Pun intended) lol hope you guys catch that, etc.

How was the recording and writing process?

Ahhhhh let’s see, believe it or not, “Politics And Critics” was recorded all the way back in 2011.  Originally, there was a totally different hook/chorus and melody.  I put together the entire “Black Balled” project late last year 2016.  I ended up going thru some of my old songs and studio sessions and BOOM!!!  I came across “Politics And Critics” the most perfect fitting record and introduction to exactly what I am trying to say as an artist and creative, made some small changes and tweaks, now it’s here for the world to hear.  Here it is now 2017 going into 2018 and Politics And Critics was originally recorded in 2011.  So yeah, let’s just say it was a loooonnnggg drawn out process….

What aspect of society and politics did you get to explore on this record?

The urge for fame, instant popularity, and perception of the music and entertainment business, most importantly how society is trained and manipulated to view a music artist or a celebrity in general based on how the media portrays them

Any plans to hit the road?

Of course, once we figure out the aesthetic of my shows and creative direction of the stage design, but ultimately it all relies on the demand of my fans…..or better yet let me say this, if in every venue only one fan show up, there will be a tour, I’ll be there for sure, if that answers your question….

What else is happening next in Success’ world?

I’m currently working on the follow up project to “Black Balled”, and the title is encrypted in my answer to one of your interview questions, have fun figuring it out….
