Thank you so much for having me! I’ve been busy, but very well!
Can you talk to us more about your new single “What Can I Do?”?
Of course- I’m so happy to finally have released this single! Another track that I wrote and worked with Cam Outlaw for production on – it’s kind of an extension of “Growth”. I say that because what’s coming after this is SO different.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
Totally. Someone left me super suddenly. They got on a plane to leave the country for an extended period of time, and told me, like, two days before they left. I felt totally helpless, because there was (figuratively and literally) nothing I could do, and no way to reach them. Feelings of regret totally took over, and left me wishing I had said more, or acted differently.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, for sure! We’re planning to shoot a video for this over the next couple of months.
The single comes off your new album Growth – what’s the story behind the title?
Actually, this single isn’t off of “Growth”- it’s my first single since “Growth” came out, but it definitely feels like an extension of that EP. It’s sort of like, we’ve moved, but we’re still in the same world.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing and recording process felt so much more organic. It was the first time I went into the studio after releasing “Growth” and things just felt really seamless and genuine. I definitely was able to explore freely, and it was really just a lot of fun.
How has 90s influenced your writing?
The 90s are really having a moment right now. I grew up on 90s/00s R&B and pop. I think, even though my music doesn’t sound so much like pop, there are a lot of pop sensibilities in it that sort of stuck with me from that era, and come out in my writing.
What perceptions did you get to explore on this record?
I think a pretty wide range of emotions was explored while recording this piece. There was this element of fragility, given the story behind the song, and I was really trying to convey that in my vocal performance, but there was also this element of power and confidence- both in having the courage to express so honestly, and just being really sure about what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m traveling to the UK at the end of December for some shows, and will be playing a few fun events in NYC this winter and spring. I’m definitely planning to travel more next year, though!
What else is happening next in Aria Jay’s world?
I’m writing, producing, and recording new material, and planning a video shoot for my next single. I’ll be making my production debut on the next tracks coming out, so I’m looking forward to getting those out!
