INTERVIEW: Counterpoint

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi guys! It’s great to speak with to ya’s.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Honestly”?

Sure mate, “Honestly?…” has been written for quite some time lyrically but never really came into it’s own until we got in the studio at Treehouse.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It’s a culmination of events really that lead to the song coming about, it’s more of a realisation really. That some people, some places, some relationships are toxic and the most difficult thing to do is to realise this ourselves, it’s very easy to turn a blind eye.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

We originally set to release our song “Leave It All Behind” as our debut, the filming of which was done inside Big City Jacks studio in Bury, Manchester. We had been there previously to record our first ever tracks so it was like revisiting an old friend.

The single comes off your new EP If Not Now, When? – what’s the story behind the title?

We’re all working class northern lads 3 of which are all from the same small town. Small towns have a way of consuming people. At some point we’ve all had that If Not Now, When? Moment. Ted moved to leeds, Michael went over the water and I headed to Milton Keynes, Preston and Manchester before we all converged in the middle. We jumped at the chance to get away from that life and see what else there really is beyond the dole and the Wetherspoons.

How was the recording and writing process?

Pretty excellent to be fair, our producer Dan Jeffrey led our preproduction and basically sat down with our tracks stripped them right back to the core and built them back up from the ground. This took months. Adding layers and layers, changing choruses and drinking rum. We knew Dan from the Alt metal scene anyway and knew he was an utter work horse and couldn’t wait to get in the studio.

How has Papa Roach and While She Sleeps influenced your writing?

Papa roach have gone from rapping to screaming to singing across a 20 year career and they’ve always just done whatever the hell they wanted, i’ve always had a huge respect for that. If you try to be just like other bands you will struggle because you’re gonna second guess every choice you make, just do you. WSS have always been a fan favourite of ours, we’re seeing them Twice in the next couple of months. They are unfathomably DIY and incredible musicians. We loved their music so much we used the same studio and producer for our music.

How would this record showcase a more matured side of the band?

I’m not entirely sure it does to be honest! the chaos, the nuance, the inexperience, the fear and the passion is all still at the heart of the record it’s just a bit more, ordered. I suppose that mature isn’t it! Everything put away nice and tidy. Mum would be proud!

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Always trying to dig a little deeper lyrically, mostly just want to let other people know that it’s okay to feel self-doubt and unsure but always try and push yourself to be the best version of yourself that you can manage to be! Buy the ticket, take the ride

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes mate! EP launch show in Liverpool in Feb and then we hit the road in March up and down the UK. All about that van life!

What else is happening next in COUNTERPOINT’s world?

We’ve got some more music to release, we’ve got some new merch coming in the new year. Tour planned for next year and we’ve had some amazing opportunities offered to us that we’re trying to work out! 2018 is going to be a really exciting year for us! We hope you follow us for the ride!
