Danish singer-songwriter and musician MarieDahlstrøm and London-based singer-songwriterFrenchie, the creative force behind musical project The Naked Eye, come together on the track‘Before Then‘. Taken from the former’s delightful ‘Nine’ EP and recently featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Fire Emoji playlist,‘Before Then’isan impressive release that displays both singers’ passion for soul and jazz. Written, arranged and performed by the pair – the track is mixed and produced by Marieherself, who also plays all instruments bar the soothing electric guitars played by Frenchie.
The track is now able to be seen alongside its new music video, which shows footage of Marie and Frenchie making the song right in the moment inside a home studio – where they bounce ideas off each other with clear happiness and inspiration. The chemistry between the two is obvious via listening to ‘Before Then‘; their vocal tones are almost identical, when their voices meet in unison it creates a sweet and slick tonal force. Filmed by Rory Langdon-Down and edited by the pair themselves, the video compliments just how natural and relaxed this collaborative composition was for the duo. Capturing much of this authenticity, moments of the vocal parts were recorded on their phones in the stairway of Marie’s flat building.
Marie and Frenchie went to the same music college but only recently began their friendship and collaboration after a New Year’s Eve party in Copenhagen through a mutual friend. ‘Before Then’ is a personal song which connected the two singers who shared a vulnerable experience. A sad tone with an uplifting and female empowering message.
The Nine EP is out now and available on all streaming platforms.
