Hi Monet, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me! I’m good cheers, hope you are well too!

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Love Me Tonight”?

Yes for sure. Love me tonight is a song about when a relationship reaches to a point that even love itself would not be able to save it any more. Sometimes people might still love each other but reality, distance or even responsibility would still tear us apart. So this song is about the “shame” some of us might have had in life, that “I will never be the one who could give you a happy ending” and “You might never meet someone who would love you as much as I do”.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

Some are from my own experience, and also my cousin and one of my close friends. They were both going through a hard time with their partners during the period I was writing this song and the lyrics of the bridge was inspired by them.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

It was quite challenging shooting it but was absolutely fun. Our drone was stuck in the airport/custom and couldn’t be delivered on time that very week, and I wasn’t able to change the filming date at that time too so I had to throw away the old script and went with this new idea. We shot this video few months ago in the Gold Coast, it was winter in Australia so the water was freezing especially when it got darker, and we had to try our best not to look cold in front of camera at the same time, but it was an amazing experience.

How was the recording and writing process?

The melody and some of the lyrics actually occurred to me while I was doing some dishes, and I finished writing the rest of the songs during studio writing sessions. Most parts of the song were recorded in the studio, and the rest part of the song- also the part that I had problem finishing recording was recorded in the hotels while I was travelling, because sometimes the view from the hotel window would calm me down and make me feel less stressful, so I used that right moment to do some recording.

What role does Brisbane play in your writing?

Because I was studying in the university in Brisbane, this song was written and mainly recorded there.

What was it like to work with Simon Cohen and Leon Zervos? How did those relationships develop?

It’s really amazing working with Simon and Leon and they are both genius. I’ve been a fan of their work and I got to work with them through mutual friends.

How much did they get to influence the song?

I gave Simon a general idea about how I would like the song to sound like and he just made pure magic and Leon also did a fantastic job on the mastering. It was quite an honor to work with both of them, especially for freshman like me.

How has your Chinese background influenced your music?

Chinese culture influences my music a lot especially when it comes to performance. I enjoy creative performance, as in combining visuals, sounds and emotion altogether.

How does your film background influences your music and the other way around?

I think every song or film is all there to tell a story, and I believe every song has a “picture”, and every film has a “sound”. I love to make music videos for my songs, to tell the stories in different levels or forms. And I think when a “picture” and a “sound” are combined in a right way it always makes the story more realistic, powerful or beautiful.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes that’s for sure! I’ve been writing songs for my first album and since I just finished all my uni degrees I will now start to finish the recordings and make music videos for the songs.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’ll be releasing singles in 2018 for sure, and the next single I might release is called “Legend”, it’s a song about chasing your dream but don’t lose yourself. But If I ended up releasing a whole album, I might name it 2:22 or just MONET.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! I’m going to China for holiday for the Chinese New Year of Dog. Also I might go to North Korea again for my next music video shooting but I’ll have to wait for the right time to enter the country.

What else is happening next in MONET’s world?

Nothing too exciting to be honest. I’m graduating next month, and after that I will have time to finally watch the show Stranger Things that my friend Dustin and everyone else have been talking about.

Thank you, it was nice talking with you.
