INTERVIEW: Danté

Hi Dante, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi guys, I’ve doing well thank you, excited to have the opportunity to answer some questions about my music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Take Over”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well Take Over was the 2nd song written for this E.P and its quite a naive song about the process of growing up and what the future holds. It basically spawned from just a bunch of experiences through high school and talking to various people from all over the place and certain figures in life having either expectations or recommendations on what you should do with your life and how you should go about it. It’s kind of about finding yourself in a sense and what you really want to do with your life.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yeah I do actually. The video has been shot and it will be out very soon so make sure you stay tuned for that.

The single comes off your new album Knowledge – what’s the story behind the title?

The story behind this E.P title was something my Dad actually said to me earlier in the year which basically he was telling me that knowledge can be one of the most important aspects in life and to never stop learning. It stuck with me and I thought it fitted the overarching theme of the whole E.P pretty well and summed up all the songs in a single word.

How was the recording and writing process?

The story behind this E.P title was something my Dad actually said to me earlier in the year which basically he was telling me that knowledge can be one of the most important aspects in life and to never stop learning. It stuck with me and I thought it fitted the overarching theme of the whole E.P pretty well and summed up all the songs in a single word.

How has James Bay and Santana influenced your writing?

Because I take influence from so many styles of music, it’s hard to say how one artist has influenced my writing. I definitely admired the way James Bay writes his music and how real his lyrics are, which is how he has influenced me the most I guess. I used to listen to Santana’s stuff when I was quite young, so maybe that’s where some of his guitar playing style comes into it, otherwise I think the stuff I write is quite distant from his style. Mostly I’m inspired by individual songs which I think allows me to take from a much wider range of influences and hopefully come up with something that sounds refreshing but also familiar at the same time.

What role does Melbourne play in your music?

I think because I started gigging so young, I have seen a bunch of different bands through competitions, local festivals and gigs across Melbourne which have almost guided me into the music that I write and play. I’ve always wanted to do something different and just watching different bands play around Melbourne has allowed me to take influences from a vast array of music and build the sound and style that I enjoy writing and playing. So I would say the people more than anything within Melbourne help inspire my songs.

What knowledges did you acquire and get to explore on this record?

With this E.P, its been the most songs I’ve recorded at once, so I’ve acquired I guess the efficiency of having a deadline on recording certain parts and the overall songs, which has allowed me to make sure I really nail the parts I need to play or sing. I think for the record it was a bit more straight forward and I didn’t want to go too crazy with anything. Because I had a pretty clear vision of the overall theme, I didn’t need to explore too much but I definitely experimented with my vocals a lot to see how it could enhance the impact of the songs.

Any plans to hit the road?

I definitely have plans to play a bunch of shows very soon, and amongst recording the next E.P, hopefully travel interstate and play some shows outside of Melbourne and see how that goes. I’m very keen to start smashing out some live shows and to show everyone what I’m all about.

What else is happening next in Dante’s world?

There’s definitely some exciting things to come. Obviously the film clip for the first single then releasing the next single with another video following that. Then getting ready to put some shows together and start playing all these songs and some new ones live and getting them out there that way. Also all the songs for my second E.P have been written and we’re in the process of beginning to record it all which I’m very excited about also.
