A: Thanks for the warm welcome! We’re doing great thanks, besides a bit of flu caught in chilly Iceland last week. We trust you’re doing well too?
Q: Can you talk to us more about your new single “Special”?
A: Special is quite ‘special’ because it the first song Eden Michelle and I ever did together. It was supposed to be the first song on my album but we decided to release it as a single/teaser as a ‘what to expect’ from the album.
Q: Did any event inspire you to write this song?
A: In particular, Eden wrote the song with the intention of me singing it. So the style and vocal melody line were created having my ‘sound’ in mind. But other than that, the song is about meeting someone who manages to challenge your thinking yet ticks every box which is what ultimately makes them that ‘some kind of special’.
Q: Any plans to release a video for the single?
A: We have already released a music video for the song which was set on the salt lakes in Cyprus. It’s not the best quality video as it was taken on a phone and the drone shots were send to me by a tourist via Whatsapp.. haha But I think it captures the raw essence of the song, so we love it.
A: Special was recorded in Eden’s kitchen/dining room in Wimbledon. It was originally meant to be accompanied by an acoustic guitar but whilst working out the arrangement together, we decided that the piano brought the song to life and supported my vocals far better.
To be honest, I never really knew I could sing until Eden sent me the recording of Special. I was blown away by the production and the sound she had managed to bring out in me.
Q: What role does South Africa play in your writing?
A: Trained as a classical pianist from the age of six, Eden grew up inseparable from the piano & won numerous awards and accolades in South Africa.
She wrote her first song ‘Photograph’ when she was thirteen and by the age of sixteen released her debut album ‘Broken Truth’ gaining huge attention from record labels, radio stations and media. Eden co-produced the album arranging and recording all the instruments alongside the late and great, Jon Buckley.
Eden signed a publishing deal with Sony Music International. Having her songs played on multiple TV shows. She created her own publishing company working alongside national and international song writers.
Eden is well known and respected in South Africa amongst the music folk, so I’d probably say that she has more of an influence on South Africa than South Africa has on her. If that makes any sense..
Q: Does your new single mean we can expect any new material – how’s that coming along?
A: Yep! As I mentioned in one of the questions above, we are a few weeks away from releasing my debut album, ‘The Smoke’. It’s been an incredible whirlwind of emotions but we are so so proud of the final product & can’t wait to show it to the world.
Q: Any tentative release date or title in mind?
A: Hopefully in the next 3 weeks or so.
Q: Any plans to hit the road?
A: We are headed to the United States at the end of January for a few months. We are hoping to perform at a few gigs in different states and meet up with some old contacts that could potentially point us in the right direction. ‘Life is never about what you know, it’s all about who you know..’ isn’t it.
Q: What else is happening next in Dan Shaw & Eden Michelle’s world?
A: Well, other than the new album. Eden has just released a new single under her EDM banner called Lost Love which I have featured on. We are busy shooting music videos and finalising production for all the singles to come after the album. Eden and I have enough content to make a few albums so we are excited to get cracking next year!
