INTERVIEW: Phoenix O’Neill

Hi Phoenix, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Phoenix: Good thanks.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cruel World”?

Phoenix: Yeah I’m really pleased with it. It’s been compared to Massive Attack and Portishead. It’s dark and emotional.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Phoenix: Yes I don’t want to go into much detail but it is about very personal experiences from my early teens.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Phoenix: Yeah we are working on ideas at the moment so hopefully it won’t be long till we create one.

How was the recording and writing process?

Phoenix: I wrote the song really quickly. I think in half an hour. So that process was very simple. The initial recordings were all recorded and produced on my phone. Working with James and Paul was great. They had loads of ideas and made it go wow!

What role does London play in your writing?

Phoenix: Well I am actually from Watford which is North London. I would say the people I have met growing up in Watford have influenced my writing as I write about real experiences.

How has Elle King and Amy Winehouse influenced your writing?

Phoenix: I wouldn’t say Elle King has influenced my writing as such but we do have a similar sound. Amy Winehouse has influenced me in the way that she writes about her life with such emotion, which is how I like to write.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Phoenix: Well I have an EP with 4 tracks to follow up the single, in 2018. I have enough songs for an album so hopefully that will follow on.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Phoenix: I’m not sure about the release date but I have a title in mind which is “Out of the Ashes”

Any plans to hit the road?

Phoenix: Yeah I’m hoping to tour in 2018.

What else is happening next in Phoenix O’Neill’s world?

Phoenix: I’m not thinking too far ahead at the moment as I’m not sure what the future holds. It’s all very exciting. I’m just looking forward to spending Christmas with friends and family.
