Hot off the success of hit record ‘Wish I Was Sober’Rhys Lewis bares all in this poignant and heartfelt new ballad, ‘Reason To Hate You’, out on Decca Records on 17 November. Showcasing a softer side to the singer-songwriter, Rhys presents one of the most personal and intimate songs he has ever written.

The new track tells the tale all too familiar to anyone who has ever had their heart broken. Rhys’ raw and powerful vocal is a testament to his skill as a singer and lyricist, drawing the listener in closely to a song of quiet desperation. His soulful voice stands strong alongside a simple guitar accompaniment – gripping and heart-rending from beginning to end.

Speaking of the new track, Rhys says, “I wrote this song about a past relationship. She ended things, but it’s not like we’d fallen out of love or had a massive fight – it just wasn’t quite working and mainly down to bad timing. It was hard for me to accept the situation, or find any reason to stop loving her. There was nothing negative to walk away from, and I remember thinking – I wish she’d cheated on me or met someone else, because it would be so much easier to get over her.

I found writing and recording this song extremely soul-bearing – it’s the first time I’ve recorded a song straight after writing it so I was still very connected to the emotions of it all. I recorded it as a live take with just a guitar, which really allowed me to feel the song and the performance. It creates a totally different energy but I think recording it that way suits the more intimate songs on the record, and I hope that comes across when people listen to the song.”

The past 12 months have been a whirlwind to say the least for the Oxford-born singer and multi-instrumentalist. Currently on tour in Europe supporting JP Cooper, Rhys has also announced his own UK and European headline tour, the majority of which have sold-out.

His latest release ‘Wish I Was Sober’ was added to 11 international ‘New Music Friday’ playlists on Spotify and hit 750K streams in 4 weeks, and his previous track ‘Be Your Man’ was streamed 1 million times in 4 weeks. His debut track ‘Waking Up Without You’ soared to the No.1 spot on Spotify’s Viral Chart, and he has racked up a total of 10 million streams in total just one year after his first release.

The 26-year-old bright talent has spent time between studios in London, Nashville, Stockholm, LA and Berlin, which has allowed him to develop a maturity to his song-writing, fusing a rich soulful tone with a lyrical immediacy straight from the heart of Bill WithersJames Taylor and Carole King. Rhys has an undeniable gift to capture emotions that will strike a chord with anyone, and has already garnered a troupe of loyal fans in the UK as well as internationally.

Rhys will be embarking on a European and a UK headline tour this autumn and his debut EP is set for release in January 2018.
