INTERVIEW: OYLS

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having us. We’ve been good. I finally broke my addiction to watching Dr. Phil so that feels pretty good tbh. But I still get this aching feeling around 3pm where I want to go to the TV to watch. Gone over a month though.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Jerry”?

Definitely. What do you want to know?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

We wrote Jerry after my very close friend, Jerry, passed away. He was my Grandpa’s business partner of 30 years and he was about the closest thing to a living saint that I ever met.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We’re first releasing a video for our last single, In The Light, and we’re working on a concept for the Jerry video.

How was the recording and writing process?

We record and write everything in David’s parents’ extra-bedroom- turned-OYLS-studio. For Jerry, David came to me with a sketch that later became the foundation of the Jerry verse. And then we spent a couple of months layering on different bass and guitar and synth parts to get a sound that we were really happy with. At this point we split up so David could mix and I could come up with lyrics and melody. We then came back and recorded vocals, and flushed out details of the song.

What made you want to write a song about this man in particular?

He was major role model for me and was a person who touched the lives of a lot of people.

Jerry was a WW2 vet who fought on the front lines on D-day. He saw just about everyone in his squad get killed and came away with the view that his incredible luck should be repaid. And so he spent the rest of his life in service of people in need. He opened a food pantry that served thousands of meals to LA’s hungry and homeless. He volunteered with the Veterans Administration, a hospital medical library, and the braille institute where he packed books to be sent to the blind in developing countries. And beyond his generosity, he was a source of wisdom and guidance for me and the many people that he helped.  I felt a massive void when he passed away, and Jerry the song came out of that pain.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

We’ll have our first EP out early next year and a second one later in the year. Definitely an album by 2020 😉

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Look for a January release for our first EP.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re working out a West Coast tour for spring of next year.

What else is happening next in OYLS’ world?

A lot is going on! Dave and I are going to head back to the studio (bedroom) to write more music. We’re working with our talented director friend Alex Medina to create a visual live performance. Our music is heading to retail radio for the holidays, so you can listen to OYLS while you shop for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza/Winter gifts. Dave plans to finally watch Planet Earth 2 in 4k. I will try to start over on my failed vegetable garden.(currently the litter box of choice for Koreatown’s stray cat population) And we are exploring our political ambitions and considering a run for local office.
