“We were listening to a lot of funk at the time, guys like Herbie Hancock and Carl Carlton. When writing we also found ourselves putting on a load of 90’s R&B girl groups just for fun, the melodies are so infectious. Those references just naturally found their way into this track and were a perfect spin on our usual style of beat-making. In the early stages of writing this track, we knew we had something special going on, but we didn’t want to rush it – so we just took some time to let it evolve, and when the bass line came through it felt like everything just fell into place.” -WITHOUT
UK based production duo, WITHOUT, have teamed up with a mysterious Scandinavian vocalist by the name of Essie, to bring us a track that is sure to cure your autumn blues. “Love Liike This” is an infectious, upbeat, and shimmery pop song that pairs funk inspired live instrumentation with the UK underground Club sound popularized by artists like Disclosure and frequent WITHOUT collaborator, Mura Masa. Referencing 90’s R&B girl groups and classic funk legends like Carl Carlton, “Love Liike This” has an undeniable groove that makes dancing irresistible.
Reminiscent of KAYTRANADA‘S ‘At All’, an eclectic new music video written and directed by Gianluca Ricceri has been released. The video follows a Sicilian synchronized swimming quartet through a daily training session – from warm up to practice to cool down. WITHOUT add that, “There’s something about discipline that bridges sport and art – the dynamic between technicality and emotion is fascinating. We felt it would be an unusual but relevant visual for the track which itself balances synthetic sounds and beat making alongside live instrumentation and a heartfelt vocal. “
What began as a love for punk/hardcore and sweaty clubs around Europe for Oliver Smith & Luke Vidamour, evolved into a fascination with synthesisers, gospel and a few years of obscurity locked inside a post-war bungalow in Guernsey. Eventually their demos made their way onto Beats 1, Radio 1, and LA’s Dim Mak Records.
Ollie and Luke subsequently married two sisters (becoming the brothers they already believed they were) and started their own record label, The Peace, to release a new set of recordings. “Wanta Be,”WITHOUT’s first release on the label, was a combination of R&B Club-Pop and seaside field recordings originally penned during a writing session for a collaborative project with Guernsey native and close friend Mura Masa called ‘islndbys’. On top of being the most “shazzamed” song in the UK, “Wanta Be” has earned over 1 Million plays across DSP’s, as well as charting on the Spotify Viral chart in the US.
