Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Great, thank you!
Can you talk to us more about your new single “Coffee, Cigarettes & Judge Judy”?
The song is 100% from the point of view of my father who at the time was battling cancer. The title comes from his daily routine toward the end of his life. He spent those days only drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and watching his favorite TV show, ‘Judge Judy’. He loved her! It’s one of the more aggressive songs on the album.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
I was able to spend some quality time with my Dad before he passed and the lyrics came from the conversations we had. He told me fascinating stories about being stationed in Korea during his time in the Army.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Shooting a video can be one of the best things about being a musician! This one, however, was really personal to me, so I really wanted to try and tell his story while remaining respectful. Jason Tucker did a great job directing and he really captured what I was looking for. The scene for the bridge, where I am sitting in a chair, seems like a calm scene. In reality, behind the camera, Chris Alef and Scott Sprague were running around frantically, moving lights and pushing Jason on a dolly to give the shot some movement.
The single comes off your new album Seventy One Trips Around The Sun – what’s the story behind the title?
My Dad was 71 years old before he passed. I wanted to name this album as a tribute of his life. He made seventy one trips around the sun…
How was the recording and writing process?
This album is definitely the most personal I’ve ever written. Half of the album was written during his illness. About a month after he passed, Jason called me up and asked me to meet him in the studio. We talked about if we wanted to continue with this album. Not exactly sure how it began, but I just started writing lyrics & guitar parts. Then we started arranging them into songs. It’s sort of bittersweet. One of the saddest writing sessions also became one of the best sessions of my life. I’ll never forget that time as long as I live.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I mentioned half the album being written before he passed. More specifically, the song ‘Wander’ was about half way done before that month long break. So the song is really two parts for me. The beginning of it has me wanting to find answers to questions I had and the end has me coming to grips with reality. That was one of the hardest songs to finish.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We are planning on bringing our live show to fans throughout the Midwest.
What else is happening next in The Tommy Marz Band’s world?

The album is currently available for pre-order now on places like iTunes, GooglePlay, etc and has an official release date of February 2, 2018. Look out for us this winter and spring in a town near you. Thanks for all of the support!
