Producer Robert Cutarella discovered Otonana Trio playing at a pub in Silverlake, Los Angeles late last year. The band sang funky songs about Ramen wars, with the lead singer sporting a kimono and surprising the audience with a clothing change into a Sumo thong. Cutarella, a record business veteran who has worked with an array of major artists including Cyndi Lauper, Sting, Joss Stone and others, quickly recognized their unique musicianship and got the band into the studio to guide a new direction in songwriting. The renewed interest in the sounds that emanated from the 80’s became the catalyst for writing “Be Careful What You Wish For”.
The result is a song which highlights the mad skills of guitarist Kentaro Saito, bassist Kazuhisa Maekawa, and drummer Hikari Kuroda, paired with hit song sensibility and a production to match. ”It was incredible working with a producer that has many ideas, different from the way we have written and recorded in the past,” says Kentaro. “We’ll be sure to get up to the Midwest on our next tour so Ian can join us on stage!”. “I’m happy that the band asked me to guest on “Be Careful..”, because, quite frankly, they are really great performers and the song is a lot of fun to sing along to.” says Ian Ash, of Milwaukee’s Ian and The Dream. “It’s a driving pop song that will get you out on the dance floor in no time!”
Otonana Trio has five previous ‘party-funk’ albums to their credit, all self-produced in Japan. They tour the U.S. constantly to adoring fans, with many dates planned for 2018.
