Hi fellows, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks for having us! We’ve been really good! Katie is currently pregnant with our first child, and she’s unfortunately been pretty sick in the first trimester, but overall we’re doing great!
From all the holidays out there, what is it about Christmas that you found so interesting?
We both grew up in homes where Christmas was a huge deal. The classic carols were playing non-stop from early November all the way till Christmas. Also, both our families went all out with decorations and the whole celebration, so we’ve kinda held onto the tradition and love for the Christmas season.
Let’s talk about your new EP Christmas – why did you chose this name for the record?
Well, we’re pretty horrible with titles in general, and this is EP is really different from our normal genre of music, so instead of attempting some clever title and regretting it, we decided to just go with “Christmas” and kept it real straight forward! haha
How was the recording and rewriting process?
It felt a little strange but also really fun to be listening Christmas music pretty much the whole month of June. We dreamed about the style, sound and covers we wanted to perform on this record, and in July when we actually got into the studio, it was like 110 degrees in Northern California. So we blasted the air conditioning and lit fall candles to set the mood, and in the end it was incredible to get to sing these songs and go after that classic sound.
How was the selection process behind what songs to pay your own rendition?
We listened to a ton of classic Christmas music while we were deciding, and we had so many favorites that we landed on what we felt would best suit our voices and a duet where we could both sing on the songs.
With so many covers made for most of these songs, what was the approach you were after?
From the moment we decided to make a Christmas EP, we knew we wanted it to have a classic feel and sound. The originals meant so much to us that we didn’t want to stray too far from them. So we knew we wanted strings through out the whole project and for the vocals to carry the songs like they did in the originals, with bells and choirs adding textures and layers through out.
Where else did you find inspiration for the music?
The music we’re normally known for creating is worship music, and the last track on this EP, “Emmanuel, God With Us Forever” we originally wrote last year for our record Champion, but knew it had to be on this Christmas EP. We are really passionate about, and find inspiration from God, from our family and friends. We love anything beautiful and creative and are always looking for those things that bring joy and meaning to life.
Any plans to hit the road?
As we’re writing this we’re about to be on a 7 city acoustic “Singalong” tour with some of our good friends Phil Wickham and Mack Brock. Then in December, we’re joining some of our incredibly talented friends “Johnnyswim” for two Christmas shows in Nashville, TN.
What else is happening next in Bryan and Katie Torwalt’s world?
We’re always writing and dreaming of the next song or record, but at the moment we’re in the middle of a new journey with Katie being pregnant and expecting our first child in early May.
