INTERVIEW: Parker Matthews

Hi Parker, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey guys! Thank you so much for the interview; I’ve been great! I’m super excited for this debut release of my single, Lost With You.  I’ve been spending a lot of time in the studio working on future material as well!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lost With You?”

Lost With You is a song resembling the essence of human connection.  I wrote the song because of one person (who’s name shall remain unspoken)  and the short time we spent together.  In this crazy world of hustle and bustle, its about finding that one person that you  vibe with and getting ‘lost’ together in life.  Too often people are afraid to open up, and take a chance on something (or someone) that could end up being an incredible addition to your life.  Lyrically speaking, the last part of the chorus is ‘your soul is hurting, I know.  Forget the time, lets start slow’- I think its so important to take things slow and really get to know the other person.  This song has a carefree feel and I want people to be able to relate to that effortless feeling of connection.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

I usually write the chorus first, and then the verses come into play, but for this one, I started from the very beginning- ‘can this moment last forever’.  I was actually driving at the time and was thinking of the time I had spent with that special someone this song is about and it just came to me.  As bad as this sounds, I was writing the lyrics down on the notepad in my phone, while driving, because I didn’t want this idea to escape me!  In the studio, I remember being at the piano and playing the simple chord progression that soon turned into a finalized track.

What was the filming experience like?

The filming experience was great.  I’m a very hands-on type person and found all of those locations myself.  I believe you have to be heavily involved in your art to bring fans the most authentic version of yourself.  We filmed for 17 hours straight and I am so thankful to have  worked with some amazing people in the industry on this project.

How were the recording and writing processes like for you?

Writing is my favorite part of the process for sure.  This song literally came to me and I wrote the lyrics in about 10 minutes.  My writing partner, Darren, and I spent a lot of late nights in the studio trying to find the perfect synth blend and really bringing the song to life.  I believe that I do my best work at night, and there were times we were leaving the studio as the sun was coming up.

How has Whitney Houston influenced your writing?

Although Whitney didn’t write her own material, her voice carried through everything she touched with such a free spirited tone.  She influences me as a singer, more than a writer, but singing should be effortless and the lyrics should flow easily to really bring it all together.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

I’m actually not doing an album, at this point, but releasing singles over the next 6 months.  I chose to take this approach because each one of these singles have a heavily weighted story behind them, and I was them to stand alone.

Would you be diving deeper into suicide and other struggles?

I won’t say much about it right now, but my upcoming material takes a dive into who I am as a person, and as an artist.  The music is going to reveal some of the pain I’ve struggled with through life, and also the happy times to.  I think being something real to the table is the most important thing you can do.  I want people to be able to relate to the music I put out.  As a kid, music truly saved my life, and I want to be able to create a solace and outlet for others struggling.  If my music can create that ‘happy place’ for my fans, then I will truly be happy.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not as of right now, but next year live shows will definitely be a thing!

What else is happening next in Parker Matthews’ world?

I’m really focused on writing right now.  I’m honing in on what I want to talk about and what I really want to say.  I’m so excited for my future material and can’t wait for you all to hear it!
