INTERVIEW: Indie-pop songstress, JULES

Hi Jules, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey there Vents, I’m great, excited to be here, how about you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single Eyes Shut?

Yeah definitely! Well the song is about my friend who struggles a lot with insomnia.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yeah, I actually had the first verse already written in another song (also about my friend), and around a year ago I started to get these repetitive nightmares and some nights they were so bad I would refuse to sleep the next night. So when I was in the studio with my producer Richard Harris, I decided to take that first verse and incorporate my friends experience with my experience.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Absolutely. The video will be out by November 14. It was such an amazing undertaking as the director recreated my entire bedroom on a sound set with a huge green screen. Like a real dream or nightmare, this bedroom will go to some cool places. It was really was a lot of hard work as I was propped up into some crazy setups. We even have some hidden classic records strewn throughout the set for fun. You can type in Eyes Shut by Jules and it should pop up on Youtube or you can watch it on my website, sheisjules.com

How was the recording and writing process?

Lots of coffee, haha. Well actually this song was a tough one. Usually when I have an idea about a song I’m sure of it and I run with it. But this one I definitely had to go with a few different key changes and I didn’t even know what the topic of the song was gonna be until I got back to my hotel that night and my dad was in the hotel room and I was on the hotel bathroom floor just meditating on this track. With the first verse that I took from the old song, I always knew that those lyrics didn’t do justice for that song. So when I put those lyrics in this new track it fit like a glove and then the whole spiraled from there, and I actually wasn’t even convinced I liked the song until a few days later, but now I’m really proud of it.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Definitely expect new singles. Lots of them. It’s been and is going great. I spent all this past year and a half creating and coming up with new material so all the singles I have lined up are all ready to go. So whether they’re out partially as singles or part of a bigger album is still to be decided.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m planning to release my next single early in 2018. As to which one that is, I haven’t decided but maybe X Vents readers can chime in! As for the title, all the songs have “working titles”.

Aside from insomnia, what other themes will you be hoping to explore following up?

My themes tend to revolve around relationships; the good, the bad and everything in between, from love to cheating. But sometimes my mind wraps itself around something completely obtuse like fire or photography, but even that tends to circle back to something relationship-related.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely. Depending how well my songs are received, it could be a West Coast tour this Spring, but I’d sure love to play for my fans on the East Coast or all over the country!

What else is happening next in JULES world?

Learning, lots of learning. The life in the studio is exactly opposite of being on stage; really two totally different personas. Like summer and winter so lots of adapting to all of this so I’m learning something totally different —

how to interact with my audience, working with new band members and playing more live shows. But on the writing side, the past year and a half I’d been experimenting with writing styles and different ways to write songs in unique ways.
