INTERVIEW: Riverbend Reunion

Starting right out of the box as someone who works in the music industry we are seeing a wider/broader range of genres than ever before. Yet, sometimes certain styles get ‘pigeon-holed.’ Is there still room for a jam band… and are folks patient enough to take an event and enjoy it beyond a 2:30 second barrage of sound?

Absolutely.  Don’t get us wrong, the industry has changed a lot especially with the way fans are consuming music now.  But there is still a solid dedicated jam band scene out there with loyal followers, looking for the new road warriors that will fill the shoes of some of the greats that paved the way.  The fans that support it are the people that look for something more organic then a 2:30 song.  That is the beauty that protects the genre.  There’s a connection between the bands and the audience you don’t experience with a lot of other genre’s.  Everyone has a role in the creation of the live performance.  It’s a reciprocation of love that’s amazing to be a part of.

Talk a bit about how all of you came together as it would seem you have all been friends for a good long time.

We have, that’s where we actually got the ‘reunion’ portion of the band name.  We’ve all known each other or knew of each other for years.  Our musical paths had been different throughout the years but ended up all intersecting at a perfect time.  There were no auditions or interviews.  We were friends that were already comfortable musically, just jamming together.  It happened rather quickly once the ball got rolling.

There must be a motherload of connection plus expertise with your instruments as you are known for improvising and taking your tracks live beyond the established tune.  Who decides a song is going to lead into a jam? How do you know it is time?

No one decides it, the moment makes the decision for you.  We can all feel it coming on.  Everyone’s eyes and ears are open looking for the next opportunity to stretch the song into something new.  In that sense, the crowd is very much the 5th member of the band.  The movements we make in songs feed off of the crowd, it’s a trip you take together.

You are out or heading out on tour soon to support Cabin Sessions Vol. 1 where can your fans find you?

This fall tour took us to Cincinnati, Muncie, IN, Iowa City then out west for 4 dates in Colorado before we looped back through Amarillo and Oklahoma City.  Cabin Sessions Vol. 1 was just released digitally on Spotify and other outlets.  Cabin Sessions Vol. 2 will be available on tour at the merch table and will be released digitally in December.  We will be gearing up for our Southeast Winter Tour next January 2018.

Tell us, when we come to hear you what is one thing we are definitely guaranteed with Riverbend Reunion?

An experience, a high energy musical journey.  We pride ourselves on our live sound and the investment into a unique performances each night.  You will hear southern rock harmony guitar licks perched on top of a thunderous bass line, and grooving, driving drums.  Every setlist is carefully curated for the night, venue, and crowd.
