Keeping up with the Folk melodies, we got a rather sad new single and video by Andy Adams who has teamed up with Carter Sampson. The video captures the themes of alienation and stray of the song as both singers find themselves very distant in two different places though they are at the same room.
About the song, Andy comments:
“Dancing Alone is about being apart from your loved ones on important dates, it’s a duet with Oklahoma favorite, Carter Sampson.“
Andy Adams is an Oklahoma City based musician, who possesses a wide spectrum of range and a variety of melodic tone. He uses these aspects to add vivid and dramatic effect to enhance the mood and movement of the stories in his songs’. In combination with his guitar work this takes his narratives into enchanting tone poems. The authentic vocal commitment and scope of the stories he tells through his songs brings the listener out of the mundane and into a new world full of possibility. Many of his songs feel autobiographical and take you back to experiences we’ve all had at some point through our lives. Each composition is complete in soul and story in its own personal universe.
“Dancing Alone is an old timey song meant to have a classic feel written by producer Kyle Reid. Originally performed by Kyle and his band The Chariots. I convinced him to record it the way we did for my record by explaining my idea for the video. So we recorded the song with the video in mind.” – Andy Adams
Hi Andy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Things at the Adams household are Great! My wife gave birth to our first child, the beautiful little Amos just over a month ago and this album I’ve been working towards releasing for more than a year is about to be released. Things couldn’t be better.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dancing Along”?
Andy – It’s old timey song meant to have a classic feel. Producer Kyle Reid and I both really like old music and complex chord progressions.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
Andy – It’s a pretty literal song. Kyle was away for his significant other at the time he wrote Dancing Alone. Originally written as swing tune for a NYE party he had booked for his band a few years ago.
How did you come up with the concept for the video?
Andy – The video concept was always in my head. It’s what I used to convince Kyle to allow me to record a song of his before he got the chance too. I said to him while we were demoing for the record in his home studio “The song is too sad to be a swing tune. Imagine it done as a sad finger picked duet and then went on to explain my idea for the video.
The single comes off your new album Back to Square One – what’s the story behind the title of the new album?
Andy – It has to due with the amount of times we as people tell ourselves “I’m not gonna do that again” and then say the same thing to ourselves two or three days later then again two or three days after that.
How was the recording and writing process?
Andy – The record was recorded in January with Joe Bello. We did all of it in 60 hours over 5 days. The writing process is never as quick. Sometimes I write music the lyrics, sometime I have just an idea and will take that to a friend to collaborate on, and sometime I write and rewrite countless times before coming up with music. Writing is a process. It’s very rarely something that just happens.
What role does OK plays in your writing?
Andy – Well, I’m from here and have lived here all of my life. My songs, even the ones I just “make up” are still based in observation and experience therefore I guess you’d have to say it play a big role in my writing.
The songs on the album feel very emotional and personal, can you share some of your thoughts with us on this?
Andy Some of them are, some them are written to seem that way and some of them are just made up stories based on characters I’ve created. The idea was to pick a bunch of songs that feel as though they fit together and are about the same person.
Any plans to hit the road?
Andy – Yes, as much as possible. Hopefully in January I’ll be able to hit the road.
What else is happening next in Andy Adams’ world?
I plan to “re-release an album I made with Wes Sharon in 2013 that no one ever heard because I didn’t understand how to push a record and have started writing song for the next full length. I will again make that with Kyle Reid and plan to have it ready to be released in 2019.
