INTERVIEW: Vancouver-based Singer Jordan Waller

Hi Jordan, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you! I have been really well. I just got back from a month-long trip to LA and it was an amazing time. Big plans for the next step of my music career and I couldn’t be more excited!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Let You Down”?

Yes for sure! I am just so stoked that this song and music video is out. The closer we came to the release the more nervous I was about the whole thing. I was unsure how people would receive it because it’s a lot different than my first song, ‘This Feeling’, and it’s my second release so its a defining moment of what people can start to expect from my music. its a mid-tempo pop song with a huge chorus verses a faster up tempo track with a drop for the chorus. But so far so good! I really think ‘Let You Down’ was a good follow up and a good idea of where my sound is going.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

A friend of mine said once that it would be cool if someone could write a song that had to do with social media more directly so I decided to try it out and I  could think of a better way to start the song than saying you’re looking on my Insta haha. I was in a relationship that had a lot of unnecessary problems based on social media. Nowadays you can like a photo and if your significant other doesn’t like that you liked that photo it can create some big problems. Or if you don’t reply to a text but you posted or liked a photo or something and they see it. It can get crazy.

How was the filming process and experience for the video?

The filming process was really fun and also stretched me a lot in my “Acting” if you will. I met both girls about 5 minutes before shooting so that was pretty interesting, but they were both amazing and so easy to work with. We road tripped to LA to film the video over a weekend. It was the craziest time and how much we fit in that one weekend was insane. One of the best trips of my life. I think we slept like 3 hours a night because of all the locations we had to hit to get the content we needed. We also got tattoos at 3am on Hollywood Blvd haha.

How was the recording and writing process?

We like to start with producing out a good idea of what the sounds and instruments will be like before getting lyrics and melodies but I wish I could show you how this song started because it sounded nothing like it does now. We changed it probably 6 times before it felt right. We had this synth line in the chorus and it was throwing me off so as soon as we muted it the chorus melody hit me. The verses and pre-chorus took a bit longer but when I came up with that pre-chorus the song really felt right and I knew it would be the next song we released.

What role does Vancouver play in your writing?

It plays a huge part because I have lived here my whole life and most of the experiences I’ve gone through happened here.

How’s your new album coming along?

Really great! I was just in LA for a month and while I was there the whole concept for it and a lot of the song have come together. I can not wait for it to be finished because I really believe the message behind it is going to have an impact on people.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I am hoping to release by the summer and I think that is possible, but we have a lot to do, especially on the video side of things! The tentative title right now is “Young Lost Love”.

Any plans to hit the road?

That is the plan when the album is done. I am itching to tour!

What else is happening next in Jordan Waller’s world?

The biggest thing is obviously the album and all that will be going into that making sure we hit the timeline. But I am also working on a clothing line right now called “Life After Death” and hoping to release the first season in the new year. I also produce and record for other people as well and have a few projects on the go right now. I can’t spoil too much so this is all I can say right now 🙂
