INTERVIEW: Rock group BJ Stricker & The Kings

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Roam”?

Absolutely! It’s a fun, energetic track that I believe is a great choice to be our first single.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote it not long after moving to the Dallas area. Although I’m certain that event had some to do with the song, it really was inspired more in a general way by how I have viewed life so far and the experiences one can have during our time here by taking chances, following your heart, opening your mind to new experiences and the beauty each different one presents.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We would certainly love to release a music video for it and it is still a possibility so we’ll just have to wait and see like everyone else.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

In my mind, it’s short, catchy and in a way kind of sums up the whole record with that title, and like I said before, it is kind of how I have viewed living life up to this point.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a blast! The writing process is right up there with performing live for me personally. It doesn’t get any better than those two things for me. The start of the writing process is so peaceful because it’s usually just me and my guitar to get it all started. If I complete the song and feel good about it or even just feel good about where a song is headed, I’ll bring it to the band and there’s so much magic that happens with these guys, man. Like I said, it is one of my favorite things because just like when I’m alone and lose myself in the moment while starting a new song, the entire band grabs the song, the feel of it, the vibe, every note and we lose ourselves in that creative moment. The recording process wasn’t much different really. I mean, we had these songs pretty well completed and had played them at shows but in the studio we were able to really tighten everything up, tweak a few things if needed. The group is filled with not only guys who are my best friends, but they are incredible musicians as well. Then you match that up with a producer like Salim Nourallah who I believe got the best out of us while in the studio and you get a damn good record and a whole heap of good times to always cherish.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?

I’m sure my upbringing finds its way into songs and I don’t even realize it, to be honest. A lot of my lyrics get started from personal life events or just periods of time overall that I’ve experienced.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Like I just said above, the majority of my songs are started from something personal to me (when it comes to lyrics), but once I have the vibe of the song and get the start that feels right I’ll allow the song to write itself in a sense. I guess similar to how some movies or books will say it’s based on a true story but are then somewhat embellished, my songs are typically inspired by true events with the freedom to become a whole different animal during the writing process.

Any plans to hit the road?

That is one of my number one goals! I so badly want this band to bring our music and live energy to as many places and people that will have us perform. I am absolutely in love with the idea of touring and am working towards that goal always.

What else is happening next in BJ Stricker & The Kings’ world?

I don’t get too far ahead of myself and the band as a whole doesn’t either. We’re just really excited to release these tunes while still performing and writing a bunch of new songs as well. We’ll keep working towards our goals and I’m fully prepared to continue doing whatever it takes to meet those goals and realize some dreams.
