INTERVIEW: J.D. King

Hi J.D., welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Marvelous, thank you.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Crimson Velvet Saddle Boots”?

Yes, indeed.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It’s basically a dream I had about communicating with the oceanic beings, and the ocean itself, with its infinite knowledge of the universe. It’s such a conductor of high energy.

How was the filming process and experience for the music video?

It was quite fun. We shot it in two days, the first at Terranea Cove which was beautiful and the second at the Ramones Ranch which is likewise beautiful. We made sets and I got to be a genie and a sorcerer. We have a nice mermaid and bubbles too. All shot on film, no digital cameras.

How was the recording and writing process?

I tracked it with some really great musicians live to tape at my home studio (at the Ramones Ranch). It’s ride or die when you track like that and you have to rise to the occasion or it won’t happen. I wrote it purposefully with interesting time signatures and melodies, yet I did so almost subconsciously.

What role does California play in your writing?

Well, I’m born and raised here and I was often told I’m very “Californian” when I lived in New York City for a time. I grew up in that lifestyle: skateboarding, music, riding choppers, surfing, record collecting, etc. It’s just how I grew up.

Does the new single mean we can expect your album, Moon Gardens, soon?

Yes indeed. Very soon.

How’s that coming along?

It’s mastered and ready to be assimilated by various entities.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not yet, but if there’s some interesting prospects on the table I’d be willing to entertain them. The album is fabulous to perform live, since it essentially is so on the recordings.

What else is happening next in JD King’s world?

I plan to record more, make more art, films, fashion, dig deeper into making some creations I have in my head. As long as I get to learn and create, then life is good.
