INTERVIEW: Electro-Pop Trio Hollywood Principle

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! We’ve been SO GOOD! We just wrapped up our brand new E.P. and we are so excited to share it with the world!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Trippin’ On You”?

Absolutely! We just put that song out about two weeks ago and have been ecstatic with the response! We actually wrote the backing track and the hook way back in early 2016, but we felt like we needed to make some tweaks. We had been playing some shows in SoCal and been frustrated with the performances; we felt our songs were incorporating a lot electronic production that made the translation to live gigs difficult. We experimented a bunch and rewrote some songs so they would gig better, and Trippin on you was the first one we reworked this way.

Like many songs, it’s about love. On a deeper level, it refers to being in the dark, being lost but having someone beside you who makes you feel strong, no matter the circumstances. It isn’t even necessarily a romantic love. We drew inspiration from the love we share with friends and family in addition to our romantic relationships.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This one Elliott wrote while he was Surfing, a typical place of inspiration for him. Kayla immediately coined “Trippin On You” after hearing the chorus, and Mike brought the tune into focus and helped hone the writing, plus directed and executed all the acoustic treatments on the song. As with most HP songs, this was a collaboration through and through.

How was the filming process and experience for the music video?

Its funny, filming the video was much easier then writing the song itself! We had the awesomely talented studio musicians Tonga Ross-Ma’u and Tim Newton in the house, and they are as fun to work with as they are talented. Mike in particular shines in a studio setting, he worked at Westlake studios in LA for some time and his expertise really shows here.

We were really pleased with the final video, as we were working the whole time and didn’t even notice how much was captured on film! Director Mike Montemarano was everywhere and nowhere all at once, and did an amazing job. Our long time collaborator AL3JANDRO was hanging with us too working on vocals, and the energy was just great: a creative space full of good people. The guys out at Studio West in San Diego are always a pleasure to work with too!

The single comes off your new album Colors – what’s the story behind the title?

The new E.P. is the most diverse record we have ever made, with pop, R&B, EDM, hip hop, metal… a little bit of everything we like. We had been talking about how it was different shades of music we all enjoyed, and eventually we landed on the moniker “Colors”. We felt that it represented the body of work well.

How was the recording and writing process?

To get these five songs, we wrote a demo a day for three-four months,  which netted us about sixty decent songs. Once we had everything done, it was pretty simple to pick out the best five, and that’s what you will hear on the record!

Probably the best advice I could give any musician, or anyone really, is to work on your craft every single day! You will grow tremendously even on the days you feel like you accomplished nothing, or wrote something terrible, or felt like you had to slog through it.

What role does San Diego play in your writing?

We draw a lot of inspiration from nature, and San Diego is a beautiful place full of wonderful places to go get lost and immerse yourself in natural beauty. Usually, we get our ideas out and about and have to race back to try and capture lightning in a bottle.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not quite yet… we have been working on writing enough material to really put on a great show. We’ve played showcases and smaller events, but we want a really strong, honed, hour long set before we start touring. To the fans that have been asking us to come tour their city: we hear you, and were coming! The wait will be worth it 😀

What else is happening next in Hollywood Principle’s world?

We’ve got a bunch of fun stuff in the works for this release, so keep your eyes peeled on our socials: we’ve got a VR game, a few competitions where you can win $$$, lyric videos, music videos, and a remix E.P. with some names the fans will recognize.

Spoiler alert! We’ve actually already finished writing most of our next album too! After a little R&R we’re getting back to the studio to get this wrapped up for an early 2018 release. We’ve got much more music coming!
