I have been wonderful, I’m actually out in LA writing songs in the sun waiting for my single to drop.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Never Give Up”?
I have had the melody and part of the lyrics for the chorus for over a year but I simply forgot. My producer friend Filous (who is also remixing the original) said: “My ambition is to make a song super minimalistic song, with little sounds”. I stole that idea the day after and started producing this, in Berlin, with my co-writer Rik Annema. Now the “over-a-year-old-melody” pops back in my head and I combine the two and we finish the record. Lyrically, I did not over think it, it came naturally.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Probably, it must have been how I felt at the moment. Sometimes you just want to hear the simple words “I’ll never give up on you”.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, I went to Berlin (again) to shoot the video with director Felix Aaron. It’s a one shot video so I had to perform 3 minutes straight, all the live lighting and camera work had to be on point. Sounds easier than it is. It was very fun to do.
How was the recording and writing process?
Laid back, the song came about spread over a year… And then I lost the audio recordings of the song, that means bass and vocals. I had to re-record the whole thing. But it turned out better then before.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or writing for someone else than when you are writing in your own?
Yes, when I’m writing for or with different artists, If a melody or lyric is good, but not necessarily one that I would use. We can still use it for whoever is singing the song. But the overall approach for every session is, let’s have fun. Sometimes it turns about to be a song for my project, and sometimes it doesn’t.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
I am taking it step by step. It will be singles for now, but there will definitely be an album.
Any plans to hit the road?
No actual plans yet, but I can’t wait to start rehearsing!
What else is happening next in Cimo Frankel’s world?
I might start dancing choreography in one of my next videos.
