Hi Characula, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Excavating myself and brushing off the dust for another exciting Halloween!
Can you talk to us more about your single “Mummy Dance”?
Mummy Dance is a song about timeless love spanning the millennia. It’s also an ode to decrepit hookups who suddenly reappear in your life. 🙂
Did any particular event inspire you to write this song?
A trip to Egypt and Bobby Pickett’s classic, the “Monster Mash”. There’s an enormous amount of mystique attached to the Pyramids and ancient sites such as Giza and Luxor, and it becomes very real when you’re standing in the ruins. I wanted to make a Halloween song for the new century and the setting was right there in front of me!
How was the writing and recording process?
The song came very easily and so did the initial recording (vocals, percussion, guitars, synths and keyboards.) However, I kept adding and adding to the song, until it was as over the top and bigger than life as I could make it! There are a lot of very talented musicians involved in this production and being in Hollywood, they’re under every nook and cranny. I found them and brought them into the studio.
What was your experience shooting the music video like?
The video went much like the way the song did. Initially I had producers, but neither the song nor the video was as big as I wanted them to be. So I took over the editing and kept working both, adding effects, musicians, changing scenes, and replacing any clips that I thought were repetitive or boring.
Can we expect a new album in the near future – how’s that coming along?
I have nine original songs recorded and mixed. However, I’m not sure today’s music climate is receptive to an album release. I’m contemplating turning each song into a video since they are so fun to make and because it’s very easy to suspend reality in doing so.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not at the moment. There are a couple of other things fighting to be first.
Any plans to take your act on the road?
I would love to do a one woman show at some point showcasing all of the songs. Each song is a standalone masterpiece (IMO, lol) and all are very theatrical. Together they’d make a perfect musical!!
What else is happening next in Characula’s world?
I’m currently in pre-production for a second video. Hoping to make it even weirder than the Mummy Dance 🙂
