INTERVIEW: Valerie Fahren

Hi Valerie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great thanks – very busy!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Say You Love Me”?

Yes, of course. It’s kind of a story about one of my previous relationships, but I tried to also write it from the viewpoint of Adele. The original purpose of writing the song was for her. But I liked it so much that, when it didn’t get picked up, I released it myself.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I have been in relationships in the past where I felt the guy was never completely on board with it, and found out later that I was right. I kind of wanted to express that and how I felt, which was kind of a mixture of love, confusion, hope and realization about commitment.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, I’m actually working on the concept for it right now as we speak, and planning to release by the holidays.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was very smooth. You know you’re working with the right people when everything comes together. I had been writing for others for years and now when it’s actually for me, it’s a differently feeling – like, hey, I am an artist too, you know?

When you write a song with another artist in mind, like you did with this one, but then record it yourself, do you approach it your own way or the way you believe the other artist would have?

I do a mixture. Mostly what they might like to sing, but I have to like it too – otherwise it doesn’t work very well. That’s a successful combination.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else than when you are writing in your own?

I actually wear my heart on my sleeve most of the time, so I don’t change too much when I am writing with others. I think I do have more creative concepts come out when I am writing for myself – it’s a very satisfying experience for me to create something myself. But I love helping other artists too. It is very fun and rewarding to experience someone else’s happiness when we have just mastered writing a great song.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Yes, thank you for asking. It will be released early next year. Date to be announced in January/February. Possibly right after the Grammys, when everyone’s mind is fresh for a new year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind for an album?

Probably when I feel like one of the songs is ‘the’ hit song for the album, I will name it that. Right now, I am loving ‘Say You Love Me.’ It’s a general feeling that I like to communicate, but there may still be something coming that hits me stronger than that.

Any plans to hit the road?

For sure. Once I release the album, I will definitely do shows in NY, CA and Florida, and possibly Europe. We’ll see where the fans take me. I am excited.

What else is happening next in Valerie Fahren’s world?

Creating new songs, collaborating with other artists, music videos, a big showcase coming up in December, and a surprise Christmas Song for the holidays. Stay tuned, it’s going to be a classic! I love the holidays.
