Hi Benta, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

VENTS! I’ve been well. Really well. Thanks for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Road With Seven Lanes”?

Of course. It’s the lead single from my forthcoming EP, Seeks. I wrote the track while in a U-Haul, helping to move somebody’s furniture in NYC. That concept for the driving beat with the heavy toms and the vocal melody just arrived upon me. I recorded the idea into my phone, took it into the studio later that day, and low and behold, the track came together super quickly. It’s a track about connections between people. And how physical connectivity is only one of several ways to achieve a meaningful, powerful interpersonal relationship.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

I think the lyrical concept sort of came together around this idea of being in a U-Haul, the association with moving somebody from one place to another and what that means, especially when you’re super close with them and they’re moving further physically away. But as with most of my lyrics, they kind of spill out of me and I don’t spend much time overthinking them. It’s only once I go back and actually digest what I’ve just wrote or said that I realize the message I’m actually trying to convey.

What made you want to go with film noir for the video of the song?

Benta is, in a way, a musical representation of the mood evoked from film noir. A dark, romanticized world, shrouded in scenes of black and white and mystery. That’s what the music feels like to me, and if you’ll notice, all of the artwork, photography and video work to date has been in this same visual aesthetic. For Benta, the visual and the experience is just as important as the music in conveying the vibe I’m seeking to convey.

How was the film experience?

So the music videos that we’ve done to this point have been exciting and really beautiful artistic expressions of sexuality, dance and this underlying sense of seeking and longing for answers. I haven’t physically appeared in any of them. And that’s obviously on purpose. So while I’ve been driving the process of choosing the director and team around the videos, discussing and collaborating on the concepts around the videos, I’m typically absent from the actual shoots themselves, which are being done all over the world at this point.

How was the recording and writing process?

I love the recording and writing process. I typically work out of my home studio that I built several years ago, so it doesn’t get any better than that. As mentioned, Road With Seven Lanes came together really quickly in the studio once the idea was there. And actually, on our YouTube channel, we’ve just posted a video that I’ve done that details the production and recording process and techniques used on this track. So go check that out!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Well, an EP, yes, called Seeks. It’s been complete for several months now, so very, very excited to bring it to listeners over the next few months. The response from people that’ve heard it already has been really strong so that’s exciting. I was really conscious about, even though that it’s only 5 tracks and not a full album, making a cohesive work of art that had a consistent sound, vibe and message throughout.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Seeks EP. We’re targeting sometime over the next month or two. Maybe we’ll surprise you and put it out without warning. Maybe not. Stay tuned.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m playing several shows in NYC over the next few weeks and months, and am actively exploring opportunities to tour and do festivals into 2018. There’s nothing better for me than playing live. In fact, that’s why I launched this project in the first place. So yes. I’m coming for you soon.

What else is happening next in Benta’s world?

Lots! Obviously the EP. Several remixes that I’ve done with other artists are forthcoming over the next few months. I’m also writing and producing for and together with other artists a bit more lately which has been really exciting and inspiring. Lastly, I’m working on a first full length album. Still have a ways to go on it, but hopefully can release sometime in mid-2018.
