Q: Hi Christopher, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
A: I’ve been good! Thanks for asking. Gearing up to release more songs, so it’s exciting.
Q: Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Go”?
A: I had the melodic idea for a few years but could never find the lyrical inspiration I needed until I moved down to LA. Definitely a song that took a lot of time to get right.
Q: Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
A: I think it was a collection of moments that I went through while living in LA; moments where you feel like it’s ‘now or never’ and you need to just go for it. I hope people can relate.
Q: Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not for this song but I plan to release one for the main single off the EP – releasing shortly.
Q: How was the recording process?
Many late, late nights. But really thankful to my producer, Ike Breton Van Groll, for staying patient with me in the year-long process of completing the EP.
Q: What was it like to work with Chad Howat and how did that relationship develop?
A: I love Chad! He’s such a talented guy but also so kind and down to earth. We met years ago when my old band was recording in a shared recording studio/space out in Nashville (he was recording there with his band, Paper Route). We’ve kept in touch since then and it only made sense to work with him for mixing the album when the time came.
Q: How much did he influence “Go”?
A: I think he really brought the song to life from a ‘mix’ standpoint. I trust him with his mixes and he definitely allowed certain parts of the song to stand out and shine more than I had initially envisioned – which I love!
Q: What role does LA play in your writing?
A: Because I’m constantly surrounded by so many creative and driven people in LA, it inspires me to keep writing and to try harder. Coming from Seattle, I had a more laid-back approach to songwriting but after moving to LA, I feel like I need to constantly prove to myself that I can write a better song.
Q: Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
A: I’m releasing my debut EP with a bit of an unorthodox approach – song by song. I finished up 5 songs for the EP and will release all of them over the span of the next 5-7 months.
Q: Any tentative release date or title in mind?
A: I went back and forth with regarding the title of the album but eventually kept it to a self-titled EP. For me, I wanted the perfect title that captured all the songs and rather than forcing it, I decided to keep it my name since these songs are a representation of who I’ve become the past couple of years.
Q: Any plans to hit the road?
A: Not at the moment. Depending on what kind of traction the EP garners and how it’s received, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it!
Q: What else is happening next in the Christopher Young world?
A: Releasing the main single, “Mercer Island”, really soon! Expect it this month. Really excited about it.
