INTERVIEW: Mid Reflection

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great thanks! Been super busy preparing for the release of our EP but also writing a lot of new material.

Can you talk to us more about your song “Outcast”?

Sure – Outcast is a song about feeling left out on a larger scale by society and on a more personal level by the people in your life – to the point to which you wonder whether you can carry on without their acceptance.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song was inspired by our vocalist Matt aka 2T’z experiences in school, where he suffered severe bullying to the extent that he had to move schools multiple times.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

Absolutely – we filmed a video last week and it will launch at a similar time to the EP (24th Nov)

Why naming the EP after this song in particular?

We felt this song really embodied our essence as a band – moody guitar driven rock fused with a fast and gritty flow of heartfelt and hard-hitting lyrics typically found in rap and grime. Everything came together perfectly on this track so it felt natural to name the EP after it.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process took place over a year or so. We always write collaboratively when rehearsing, and then refine the ideas over a period until we’re happy with the tracks. Outcast was probably the track which took the longest to write as the whole track is built around a 3 chord progression – so we had to work hard to have subtle variances and nuances to keep it sounding fresh throughout the track but we feel we nailed that in the end. The recording took place in a studio in Kent over 2 days which was a lot of fun. We knew exactly how we wanted the tracks to sound going in to the studio which made it a lot easier to be focused on working on achieving the sound we wanted.

How has Gorillaz and Linkin Park influenced your writing?

Musically, we really respect how both bands effortlessly cross genres and never confine themselves to one sound, which is something we strive for ourselves. I think with Linkin Park especially, the lyrical content has always been soemotionally powerful and raw – made even more true since Chesters tragic passing. Our songs tend to address themes of having to overcome or face negative emotions and the struggle surrounding that so there are definitely similarities there.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Lyrically the inspiration comes from Matt (aka 2T’z) life experiences so he is just sharing his emotions from the past and present. Musically, we all have a wide range of influences varying from rock, punk hip-hop etc…, but when we come together we try to piece it all together in a way which is unique and fresh so doesn’t just replicate what we were inspired by.

Any plans to hit the road?

Hopefully early next year!

What else is happening next in Mid Reflection’s world?

For now, we’re focusing on getting this EP out and hopefully sharing it with as many people as possible. Once the EP drops we will start gigging regularly to support it and we already have a lot of new material written so we will probably be releasing either another EP our debut album in 2018!
