You know me VENTS, just chillin’ and trying to make a livin’. I just had some Philz Coffee and I rarely drink caffeine so buckle up.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single?
Absolutely. “Hit Rewind” is the name and it is truly the song of the summer, released in September, because global warming. If you’re having a day that has been a mix of either good or bad, go listen now on your favorite music platforms!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I think the Trump election / recent political climate in general inspired it. It came from a place of “yikes everyone is so divided, I miss when we were all buds who at least pretended to be cool”. But also, I thought it’d be a fun to challenge to find a way to talk about that while shaping it into a song that pretty girls would maybe pre-game to.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not this time. It’s easier than ever nowadays to make a video, but it’s still very difficult and expensive (time and / or money-wise) to make something GREAT that is going to cut through all the noise. I’m waiting to invest in the right song with the right concept.
How was the recording and writing process?
At first it was tough, because writing great music is difficult. But, thanks to poor labor laws and criminally low wages I realized I could just outsource everything to India. Now, the recording and writing process is so cheap and easy!
What was it like to work with Louis Vivet and how did that relationship develop?
It’s clear to me now that working with someone as handsome as Louis Vivet can negatively affect productivity. It’s impossible to get clean guitar takes when you keep getting lost in his stupid perfect blue eyes.
How much did he influence the song?
Louis came in from the beginning with excellent vibes and brought a lot of energy and polish that had been missing in older versions of the song. Very organic, pasture-raised, grass-fed kind of collaboration. He created the initial drum beat from the main guitar riff and the rest just kind of happened in one session basically. I like that guy.
What role does L.A. play in your writing?
I live in L.A. so I feel like having a bedroom to write in is quite chill. Also L.A.’s constant onslaught of sunlight is great because I am basically a plant and photosynthesis keeps me alive.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
I have a couple more singles and collaborations (some future-pop / EDM type stuff with very rad producers) in the pipeline to close out the year. I had a cool moment very recently where I went back through old project files and voice memos and realized I have like 20 fully written songs that I can develop, so I’m going to boil it down to the most meaningful ones and make an EP!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Right now I’m thinking late-winter / early-spring. Here are some potential titles straight from the heart:
“Please please listen to my songs”
“I sure hope this single gets on a Spotify playlist”
“Why is PR so expensive?”
“Cold pizza > Warm pizza”
“Listening to your heart: For Dummies”
“This is a super rough version a bunch of stuff is going to change anyways, I made this in like 2 hours, not final at all: The EP”.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m focused on writing and recording with myself and my music friends right now, but I am playing a Sofar Sounds show in San Diego Oct 14!
What else’s happening next in Axel Mansoor’s world?
My girlfriend just got a border collie puppy. Her name is Fidget, she’s 4 months old, and she already has more integrity than Congress. I have to say it feels amazing to have another sentient being freak out and temporarily lose it’s mind anytime you leave for even an hour and come back home. Try it if you haven’t yet, it’s good for the soul.
