INTERVIEW: The Bondurants
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
All good thanks, very busy preparing for the launch of our debut album!
Can you talk to us more about your song “Only One”?
Its a timeless classic based upon that old familiar theme of ‘that woman done me wrong’ and left a whole deep down inside.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Just one of many troublesome encounters that we have had with the opposite sex over the years – endless material to find in those relationships.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Yes we’ll be releasing a video very soon for our song ‘Hollywood hills’.
The track comes off your new album The Devil Above – what´s the story behind the title?
Its trying to say that the things that influence our day to day lives are not always stemming from the source that we think, and that source may be seen to be doing positive things for us but in fact it could be trying to achieve that opposite. Its about challenging what we think is the truth and finding the right path to a happy life.
How was the recording and writing process?
A real labor of love to be honest, we spent the best part of 6 months in the studio, refining and creating material that made it on to the album.
What was it like to work with Andy Hawkins and how did that relationship develop?
We’ve known Andy for the best part of 10 years and he’s been involved in past EP’s we have recorded, it was just a really organic choice to work with Andy again to be honest – we know what we are going to get!
How much did he influence the album?
Andy always brings a fresh perspective to the music and played the keys on the album. A real creative tour de force.
In a very competitive time for Country music – how are you hoping to stand out from the rest?
I think the music has to stand up for itself to be honest, I think we deserve to be judged against the best in the genre. I’m a firm believer that if the material is good enough then it should cut through in a crowded market of alt-country that we find ourselves in.
What role does the UK play in your writing?
Heavily – we don’t pretend that we’re from Nashville, we write authentic songs based on real experiences that all derived from our lives in the UK.
What aspect of loss and relationships did you get to explore on this album?
All kinds, from endings of relationships to losing ones that have been the closet to us, some losses came quickly some were a long time coming!
Any plans to hit the road?
Absolutely – we’re currently in the planning stages of a 2018 UK tour. Follow us on social media for more information!
What else is happening next in The Bondurants´ world?
Well we have the album launch at the Headrow house in Leeds on October 15th and then its planning for the tour, video and 2018 festival season – we have a busy year ahead.
