Hi Mo, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great thanks. Nice to meet you guys and thank you for having me!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single ‘Undercover’?

‘Undercover’ is my debut single and it was released on 8th September. I feel like it’s a good introduction to me as an artist because it’s basically a mix of urban genres with an element of pop added.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, it’s about a girl I was friends with for five years before we finally started dating! She was in a relationship, so the timing wasn’t right, but every time we saw each other I felt this chemistry between us, which inspired the lyrics.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! We shot a video for it and I can’t wait to share it next week!

How was the recording and writing process?

It was fun! I had a whole week in the studio with my co-writers Bea Munro and Harry Shadow. We would set a timer for 20 minutes to come up with a new song idea, which was a new approach for me but it was great. It means you really don’t have time to overthink anything… It’s just pure vibes and you know you get to try something completely different when the 20 minutes are up. We’d record everything and come back to all the raw ideas with fresh ears the next day – and only finish the ones we were still really excited about. We wrote ‘Undercover’ and the rest of the EP like this!

I recorded most of the vocals when we first had the final lyric, there’s something about that moment when you first get to sing the whole song! It’s hard to replicate that vibe, so on most of my songs the guide vocals are actually part of the final recording.”

What aspect of R&B and Soul did you get to explore on this song?

I grew up listening to artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown, and also love current artists like Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Anderson Paak. There’s a bit of both worlds on ‘Undercover’, but we didn’t really think about genres to be honest, whatever felt good made the record.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Well, I have more songs that are either finished or in the pipeline, but I’m focusing on singles and a few EPs for now, before releasing an album.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yes, my first EP is called ‘Undercover EP’ and it will be out on in November!

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m still doing gigs with Incognito from time to time. At the end of October I’m joining them for a two-week tour in Australia, and I’m doing other shows with them in Russia, Germany and Slovakia in November. But I really can’t wait to hit the road with my own band.

What else is happening next in Mo Brandis’ world?

Ha! A lot right now actually… Tomorrow, 22nd September, the Harry Shadow remix of ‘Undercover’ will be released! Next week the video is up online. Then on 6th October my second single ‘Red Lights’ will drop. I’m planning to do a few acoustic videos and we’re also in the middle of editing a video for another track that I shot in Ibiza with a friend of mine. Just don’t expect the usual Ibiza-boat party-beach-and-night club-video, it’s a little different, that’s all I can say for now… It will be released along with the EP in November!
