Today, Charming Liars release their latest single “Insomnia,” showcasing the lush melodies and dark alternative energy that have defined them since their 2013 emergence. Accompanying the entrancing synths and energetic guitars of the Los Angeles-by-way-of-London trio (Kiliyan Maguire, Karnig Manoukian, and Mike Kruger), “Insomnia” builds into an undeniable chant that’s both infectious and hypnotic. While, lyrically, the single was born out of observations made through the haze of sleep deprivation, Charming Liars’ attention to detail in every aspect of the production process colors “Insomnia” with consequence.
“A lot of music you hear in the electronic realm lacks feeling,” Karnig says. “It might get you to dance or move in a club, but we want people to feel something that can help you through a bad time. We try to push the songs beyond the surface. There’s a lot going on in there. At the same time, everything had to be catchy, stand for something, and possess a unique musical quality.”
“Insomnia” is the follow-up to their 2016 EP, 12:31AM, which spawned the single “Soul,” generating 595k YouTubeviews and 151k Spotify streams alone, earning Charming Liars acclaim from Music Connection, Indie Minded, and Sir Elton John, who spotlighted them on his Beats 1 radio show. Having built a following in South America, the trio have headlined shows across Brazil, in addition to sharing the stage with Kings of Leon, Jack White, Blaqk Audio, Night Riots, and more.
