Early in life, frontman Danny McCook spent nearly two years in and out of hospitals, fighting a rare disease that confounded doctors. During this complicated period, McCook used his down time to teach himself music, eventually writing songs to help him cope with this period of struggle. One his sickness unexpectedly cleared up, McCook returned to the feelings he had encountered, channeling them to create his beautiful and spiritual debut EP Jungle. “Lion” comes as an new chapter following the EP, continuing the McCook’s impeccable ability to connection his emotions to the music that reflects the fight he endure during that period of time. “The song is about overcoming your demons, embracing them and taking control of them” McCook shared with Huffington Post. “Using your weaknesses as strengths, taming your lions.”
“Lion,” which was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, and hit #39 on the Spotify US Viral Charts follows the path Saint Mesa blazed with “Jungle,” which garnered over 1+ million streams on Spotify and landed TOP 10 on Spotify’s Viral Chart and TOP 10 on Hype Machine’s Popular Chart. Saint Mesa will take that momentum on the road in September, when they join courtship. on their six-stop West Coast co-headline tour.
