Shao Jean + Leyeux have release their newest single “Kites Sky High”, a melodic, colorful combination of world music, jazz, and folk. Listen here
The duo of Shao Jean and Jack Snyder (Leyeux) met in the spring of 2015 at Berklee, have both grown up with music. Shao studied classical piano from age 5 through high school, and started playing guitar in her teenage years. She began writing songs at the Berklee College of Music. Jack started studying drum set at age 7, continuing through high school where he began singing and playing guitar to write songs.
One year after their first writing collaboration, Shao had graduated from Berklee after taking time off college to return home (Singapore) for half a year, and Jack had moved back to Vermont (where he is from) to re-root with family. Jack and his dad have a shared passion for music, and were in the process of building a home studio room in the house. Jack invited Shao to Vermont for a weekend to explore Vermont and potentially write more music. The trip felt spontaneous, as the two had a relatively new relationship with music, and they hadn’t written in over a year.
Over that weekend. they began experimenting with the instruments and recording equipment available. By the end of the weekend, the song “Earthy” had been fleshed out. Throughout the entire writing process, they were learning more about each other, and uncovering what they share – both musically, and in their life’s journeys.
After the first writing trip, Shao returned to Boston and was preparing for her move to Los Angeles for a job opportunity. The job opportunity fell through, and she had more time in the East Coast. She contacted Jack with a proposition to continue collaborating, and to write more music. Jack was all for it. They met again in Vermont, and procured 3 songs in total (“Things Unseen”, “Kites Sky High”, “Patience”), developing and recording the songs as they finished writing them. Back in Boston before she finally moved to the west coast in September 2016, Shao wrote arrangements for and recorded strings and woodwind sessions for some of the songs on the EP.
Almost a year has passed since this project started, and Shao and Jack have each transplanted to Los Angeles, CA. Two additional songs “Awaken” and “Road Leads to Know” were written in early 2017 to complete this body of music.
