Hi Mike, welcome to VENTS!
Thanks for having me!
How have you been?
Very good thanks! As you can imagine it’s been quite a busy few weeks gearing up for the single release, but now it’s out I’m really excited for everyone to hear it… and more importantly to hear what they think!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lying For Love”?
Where to begin… Lying For Love is my debut single which has just come out on Spotify and Apple Music. I was sitting on it for a while so it’s nice that it’s now out in the public domain!
I was fortunate enough to strike up a great partnership with Brighton based producer Toby Scott and we’ve written a fair few tracks together over the past year or so and Lying For Love was one of them. It was such a natural process, and as soon as we started getting into the track we knew we were onto something that struck a chord with both of us which was really exciting!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I think everyone can relate to falling for someone they probably shouldn’t have at some point.. That’s what I like about the track, it’s personal to me, yet millions of others can relate to it in their own unique way.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
The music video actually comes out on YouTube very soon! We filmed it over 3 very wet days in Manchester, but I’m really happy with how it turned out! I really cant wait for everyone to see it! Some music videos can be detrimental to the track as they can blur/ muddy the true meaning of the song, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with this one I’m happy to say.
How was the recording and writing process?
We actually started writing the track about 6 months ago, and the melodies we came up with in the first hour are the melodies you can hear on the track today. We tweaked the lyrics bit by bit over time, but that’s natural… your always striving to improve lyrics so they resonate even more with whoever may be listening, but at the same time they have to represent what you want to say as an artist- it’s a fine balance.
How has The Eagles and Oasis influence your writing?
I grew up in a musical family and The Eagles were always on repeat in our house. Some of the melodies and lyrics they’ve created over the years are simply mind blowing and no doubt Don Henley and Glenn Frey as two of the best writers of all time. I’ve got a long way to go to reach their level but I feel that just by listening to the likes of ‘Hotel California’, ‘Take It Easy’ & ‘Life In The Fast Lane’ etc gives me a head start in songwriting.
My mums side of my family are from Manchester, so there’s no chance I would not grow up an Oasis fan. You’ll struggle to find more iconic tracks then ‘Champagne Supernova’ and ‘Wonderwall’ that genuinely touch and act as soundtracks to millions of peoples lives. They also don’t take themselves too seriously, I mean ‘Shakermaker’ was a popular toy in the 70’s… you don’t get too many bands writing songs about toys do you. One of the lines in the song ‘Mr. Soft’ was taken from a mint commercial. Random yet brilliant.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are covering someone else than when you are writing in your own original material?
Whenever I cover someone else’s song I make a conscious effort to mix it up and differentiate it from the original to suit my style. Whereas when I write for myself I don’t have to make that effort as what I write is authentically already me. I do enjoy covering other artists work as I learn a lot from it, whether it be new melody ideas or chord progressions etc.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
The first single has only just come out, but we have plenty tracks in the bank! It’s early days but you can expect something in the new year!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
You’ll have to keep an eye on my socials for that ????
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! There are plans being put in place as we speak for a nationwide tour this year! Once again, keen an eye on my socials for announcements and dates! Playing live is the best part of the job so I cant wait to get back out there!
