INTERVIEW: PhiloSofie

Hi Sofie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I have been doing well, thank you! I’ve been working on a lot of new music!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Picky”?

I started with the sound of my brother’s squeaky door and then went from there. That sound became part of the drum beat, and after that I created the bass and chords for the track. Everything seemed to blend well so I wrote the lyrics and melody to go along with the dreamy atmosphere.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It all started as an experiment, I wanted to see what I could create in 24 hours. “Picky” ended up being the result, 26 hours later. I am very happy with how it turned out!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I am not planning to release a video for it but I am definitely planning on making some videos for some of my other songs that will be released later this year.

How was the recording and writing process?

Usually when I sit down to write a song, I start by writing down random words that I feel connect with one another. I’ll head in one direction and see how far I can go with a particular theme, or I’ll write down an experience that has happened in the past and see if there are any lyrics I can create from that. I also like to think of quirky phrases that not everyone is used to saying or have even heard of before. Usually recording takes a long time for me. I’ll end up recording a verse over and over because in my mind it never seems good enough. However, I’m much better with the whole process now. Usually the first or second take is the best because it’s full of raw emotion.

What role does Vermont plays in your music?

I love being in Burlington because I get to have the best of both worlds. I can enjoy the city and walk down church street, or I can go hiking in the mountains or swim in the lake. The environment definitely plays a part in my creative process. I can be inspired from the nature around me or from experiences I’ve had in the city.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely, recently I collaborated with Lucian to produce a track called “Do My Thing”. It almost has half a million views on YouTube, which is super exciting! Since the release, I have been getting collaboration requests from other producers. I have been working on quite a few and will hopefully have some new tracks to show you guys this coming year!

Any plans to hit the road?

I am saving up to visit Iceland, hopefully sometime this year. I’ve always wanted to go there to hike and explore the terrain. For now, I will go back to school and continue to work on music in the studio.

What else is happening next in Philosofie’s world?

I’m currently working on a secret project that I hope to release this year. I’d like to start making videos for my YouTube channel that focus on music and the creation of it, maybe that will be another project I will begin this fall!
