Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Devoid”?
“Devoid” addresses some of the major issues I’ve seen with US foreign policy over the years and how our constant intervention only makes things worse.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
A lot of the hypocrisy I’ve seen in the conservative Christian circles honestly. I consider myself a Christian, but the lack of empathy I hear from those that claim the same faith as me is abhorrent. People tend to dehumanize the people in nations our country is in conflict with, resulting in hateful rhetoric. These are the same people who support endless wars and “carpet bombing” civilians.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We decided to go with something different and avoided the “standard” music video for “Devoid”. We hired our good friend Ian Bell to shoot a concept video and gave him the artistic freedom to do as he pleased. The video can be found on our YouTube channel or on Dreambound.
How was the recording and writing process?
We put a lot of work into writing and recording our new material. It was stressful, but rewarding in the end. We got to work with our good friend Chris Galvez again, which is always a great experience.
As the band changed its name, how has that influence the sound?
The name change came as a result of us shifting our focus. We made a conscious decision to pursue a different sound about a year ago.
What conflicts did you get to explore on this record?
We covered a wide variety of political and social topics ranging from privacy rights, nationalism, statism, illegitimate war, and much more. My perspective is that everyone wants to rely on government to fix issues that happen in our society, when it usually only makes things worse. The theme of the album is about reducing the power that the state has over the people.
How’s your new album coming along?
It’s finished. We just recently received our final mixes. We are very excited to share this with everyone.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Still TBD at the moment. We are working on some things logistically first.
Any plans to hit the road?
That’s still in the works. We’ve played a few shows in our region so far. We hope to have some tour dates confirmed soon.
What else is happening next in Hostile Array’s world?
We just finished shooting a video for our next single “Herd Instinct”, which we hope to have out very soon. Keep an eye out for that.
