Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Gold Coast Dreaming”?
I can. It’s one of my favorite songs we’ve written and I think it’s a good first showing for our band. I think it has a great culmination of all the things that make us Pet Fangs… the lyrics, the groove, the guitar and the experimental elements. Really excited to get this one out into the world.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I remember we stayed up really late at our studio in Louisiana. We were drinking beer, throwing darts and listening to a Charlotte Gainsborg record. I think at some point Jory wrote down the words “faded pink hair” in his notebook… He was probably looking at girls on Instagram… I kinda locked in on the phrase and by the early morning we had the first verse and chorus done.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yeah, we should have it out in a few weeks. It looks like a cross between a Gucci ad and a 90’s NOLA rap video.
How was the recording and writing process?
This one gradually unfolded over time… I went and wrote the second verse lyrics on my own after that initial session. David and Jory came up with that “no more dancing” part when we took it back to our studio and I used that as inspiration for the 3rd verse. We ended up moving it around to a few different studios over the next couple of weeks to track it and mix it down. That’s when it really came to life with all of Ben’s piano and keys stuff.
Would you call this a departure from your previous musical projects?
Yeah. This project was kind of born out of the ashes of our old band which had a pretty strict rock and roll / boogie woogie aesthetic. When we went into the studio to see what would come out, we decided to have a no rules approach. We quickly realized this was a new project and it was gonna surpass anything we had done previously.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yeah totally… we’re gonna put out the hits one at a time, then put out the masterpiece.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Any plans to hit the road?
We are planning to hit the skies, but if some band is brave enough to let us open their arena tour, we might consider going on the road.
