Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
All good thanks! Keeping busy and are really excited to be speaking with you!
Can you talk to us more about your song “What About Us”?
The song was written about going through a turbulent relationship. This is probably the most experimental track on the EP, as it has been reworked musically a number of times.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
As a typical teenager, you go through bad relationships; you have your ups and downs. However, this certain relationship went south very quickly, being continually messed about and given empty promises. Being lead on for a long time, just to be let down again and again. Furthermore, the song arose once the relationship had finally ended and Anna had had enough.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
There are no videos in the process at the moment. However, it’s not been dismissed and has been spoken about for a while now.
The single comes off your new EP Valhalla – what’s the story behind the title?
The title comes from a pedal called Valhalla, a guitar effects pedal which was used extensively through our recording of the Valhalla ep. We loved the sound of this pedal so much, that we started talking about how well it fits with the songs that we’ve written and decided that it was the perfect title.
How was the recording and writing process?
As many bands have said the writing and recording process are completely different in themselves. There’s always a struggle to get things finished, but we never rushed. There were many pros and cons, but we made it work and we couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. We had the songs finalised and finished, but with the departure of our original bassist and us finding our new bassist Billy that brought another dynamic into the writing process we went back and re touched all of the songs where we felt necessary to finally concrete our sound.
In terms of recording, the producer Oz Craggs (Feed The Rhino) at Hidden Track Studios made the process as comfortable as possible. He had a very clear understanding of our intentions for the ep in terms of overall sound and vibe whilst also advising where he felt necessary due to his extensive knowledge as a creative musician and exceptional producer.
What role does Essex play in your writing?
As we all lived in Essex and have done in most cases (with the exception of JD) all of our lives. We have grown up around these parts and have had many many good and bad experiences which have led to some inspiration lyrically.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
We found the inspiration from experiences we have all been through. Each member of the band has different influences which culminate into the bands diversity and fluidity which has allowed us to appeal to a broad audience.
Any plans to hit the road?
After a few beers maybe? No in all seriousness there are talks of us touring the EP once we feel the time is right.
